THE FLEECE-ME STATE
Editor -- If Proposition 26 passes and Proposition 28 fails, California will clearly be ready for a new state motto: Sheep Are for Fleecing. (In Latin, naturally, but as a victim of California's public primary and secondary education, I can't do the rendering myself.) Think about it. Prop. 26, under the guise of somehow making schools better for the kids, would allow homeowners to be taxed and taxed and taxed as the result of a bare majority, rather than the prevailing two-thirds majority vote. Pass it, start to fleece homeowner sheep. Prop. 28 would repeal the monumentally unjust Prop. 10, which, under the guise of somehow making early childhood better for the kids, allowed smokers to be taxed and taxed and taxed and taxed and taxed. Don't pass it, continue to fleece smoker sheep. At least Prop. 26's backers aren't as stupid and/or as hypocritical as Prop. 10's. They're not tying their ostensibly Good Cause's revenues to a source they're simultaneously striv ing to eliminate, after all. Or maybe they're just waiting until their sheep are in the fold before they start their anti-homeowning ads, a la the Prop. 10-funded anti-smoking ads. Which flock's next? "For the kids," of course.

Sheep to be sheared.
If God didn't want them sheared, he would not have made them sheep.
