Spanish term

años que le falten ... mujeres en edad reproductiva para superar esta edad

Spanish to English Social Sciences Economics Oportunidades Program in Mexico
I can't think of an elegant way to say this. So far I have:

English:
'(2) if the estimated household income is higher than or equal to the LBM but lower than the LVPCS, it is eligible to transition to a Differentiated Support Scheme, the time to remain under this scheme being defined by the number of years remaining for its members under 12 years old to reach that age or for the women of reproductive age to **superar esta edad** or for household members between 12 and 21 or 12 and 22 years of age to complete high school or workforce-oriented special education, respectively; or (3)

@Charles Don't feel silly! Your reaction only confirms that I was justified in posting the question.
Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Jun 22, 2014:
Oops! To make it fit, it needs to start with 'for' - which makes it more awkward: 'for the women to no longer be in their reproductive years'.

My mind is still open for more elegant solutions.
Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Jun 22, 2014:
@Helena First of all, thanks for sharing my bewilderment!

Your answer is good. Why don't you post it? I would add 'their': 'the women are no longer in their reproductive years''.
Helena Chavarria Jun 22, 2014:
The more I read, the less I understand it 'defined by the number of years that remain until the children in the household reach 12 or the women are no longer in reproductive years' is a translation but it doesn't mean anything :(

BTW, I haven't invented 'reproductive years'!

refers to the active reproductive years in women starting with menarche around 12-14 years and ending with menopause around 45-49 years.

Maybe I'm not at my best and brightest this morning, but I can't make sense of this. What is "esta edad"? In the case of children under 12, it is presumably age 12, but in the case of women of childbearing age? Surely it can't be 12 for them. And if it's "edad reproductiva", does "superar esta edad" mean reaching menopause? It can't mean reaching childbearing age if they are already of childbearing age. There's something here I'm not grasping. I'll probably feel very silly when somebody explains it to me.

Selected

the number of years that remain... the women in their reproductive years have left...

defined by the number of years that remain until the children in the household reach 12 or the years the women in their reproductive years have left before they exceed this age

Not one of my best efforts I'm afraid!

I'm confused by 'le faltan'. I'm not sure what 'le' (singular) refers to, although it seems that 'los años que le faltan' refers to both the children and the women.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks, Helena. Your solution for the children reaching 12 helped me to come up with 'the remaining reproductive years of the women in the household'. I now realize that it's not logically necessary to include the 'exceed' part."
2 hrs

years remaining before reaching menopause

I'm reading it as "superar su edad reproductiva" - mostly because nothing else seems to make sense.
