I think this is a more appropriate translation : I want to set an example in order to convince my readers about my principles.
You could have used set a standard but you do not have the continuation IN SOMETHING as shown in link 2.

: I'm not sure it has anything to do with "setting an example". The speaker might be providing an example, which is something entirely different.
