French term

retours d'expérience (REX)

French to English Other Education / Pedagogy grade sheets
I am aware that this question has already been covered in Proz, but not in this particular field (on a relevé de notes).
It goes with the notion of "VAE" (Validations des acquis de l'expérience) which I have translated as "Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning" (APEL).

I do not think this REX could be translated as Experience feedback, because it does not fit the context.
It is a method, along with the APEL method of awarding credits etc, based on experiences learned.

The context is a long list of subjects that are graded as for example:

Gestion de projets
Marketing
Projet & Monde de l'entreprise 1
B
Communication écrite & orale
Formation humaniste
Internet
Management - Gestion des ressources humaines
Projet scientifique et technique
VAE / *REX*
Risques industriels 1
Ergonomie

Could anyone give me a good translation of this expression, bearing in mind that "VAE" already contains the expression "experiental learning" and I cannot therefore repeat it.
APL is just accreditation for previous learning, but "VAE" seems to me to be better translated by "APEL" (ie including the experiential component).
So if you could give me something else than "APEL" or "APL" for REX, that would be great!

lessons learned

From the Wikipedia entry on "retour d'expérience":

L'équivalent anglophone peut être « feedback from past experience » ou « lessons learned » et l'équivalent hispanophone est « Retorno experiencia »"

I don't see how you can say that "lessons learned" is not suitable terminology for an educational system :-) "Accreditation of prior experiential learning" may sound nice, but it bears no relation to what the French says.
Note from asker:
Thank you for your answer and the article. However, I am not sure if these terms fit in the context of an educational system (on a grade sheet). REX, in this context, as is VAE (validations des acquis de l'expérience) are specific educational terms. as I mentioned I found "accreditation of prior experiential learning" and I am looking for a turn of phrase in that kind of register.
Sorry, there is some confusion here (my fault) the term "accreditation of prior experiential learning" is not the translation of "retours d'expérience" (REX)but of "Validations des acquis de l'expérience" (VAE). I just mentioned it to explain that I am looking for a very specific term that crops up in these EU area educational documents.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you for this answer which is the one I chose finally. However, I also want to thank everyone else for their contributions. I hesitated a lot as I especially though mortonjones answer could very well also be the correct one. But I can only give points to one person and this answer fitted in rather well!"

situated learning

I would suggest this, as a pedagogical term (please see the book excerpt in web references) which seems (to me) to tie in with the concept of REX as defined below (this I found on French wikipedia):

Oh dear- sorry! I meant "situational learning", although I see that "situated learning" is also referenced as meaning something very similar on other web pages.

Agreed. I also considered the "lessons learned" suggestion in the same wikipedia entry referenced below, but I think "situational learning" or similar has a more pedagogical ring to it suited to transcripts etc.
Note from asker:
Thank you for your prompt response. Did you mean situated learning or situational learning? (as the link provided would seem to suggest)
yes, they have even put "situation learning" as well! Difficult to know which is best...
yes, i definitely tend to agree with you!

Learning Feedback

This is very common term used mainly in TEFL.

In fact,I remember that my university TEFL teacher used to use it on a regular basis when talking about "lesson preparation" and what feeback can emerge from a lesson presented to learners.

I found something about learning feedback hoping it helps.
Note from asker:
Very interesting, especially if it is used in TEFL. Do you perhaps have a link to a text where this term appears?
Thank you! could you direct me to a link where this term appears? (I have tried myself, unsuccessfully)

APCL/APEL

APL is an umbrella term covering both prior learning (by study) and prior learning (from experience). It is often split into APCL (Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning) and APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning). So APCL awards point or credits for prior study, whereas APEL awards points or credits for prior experience.
If you translate VAE as APEL then I'm not sure you give yourself anything for Rex.

The article below gives a good summary of this interpretation.

--------------------------------------------------

It's confusing isn't it? If VAE already has "experiential" in it, then "Rex" must surely be redundant, adding nothing? I'm thinking now that the "expérience" in VAE is more the original meaning of "connaissance" (rather than "experience").

Petit Robert: Validation des acquis de l'expérience (V. A. E.) : procédure de reconnaissance des compétences acquises dans l'exercice d'une activité professionnelle, permettant d'obtenir une certification (diplôme, titre).

Crucially, this definition refers to the "certification" of the "expérience" - supporting my case that VAE is more to do with APCL.
Note from asker:
Yes, what you say is very true. The trouble is that VAE (validation des acquis de l'expérience) already has the "experiential" notion in it, which is why I felt compelled to translate is as APEL. and then I realise that it leaves a problem for REX. Still not quite sure what to do.

Learning achievement

D'après la descrition faite ici, cela s'apparente beaucoup je crois à l'évaluation du parcours de vie d'une personne, combinant à la fois ses acquis académiques et ses expériences.

I am sorry Phil but I totally disagree with your interpretation about «retours d'expérience» from Wikipedia and the «relevé de notes» provided by Cassandra. It is not at all suitable since «retours d'expérience» refers to specific entities like enterprises or their personel, organisations like NASA etc. «Il porte sur les réussites, les incidents, quasi-accidents, accidents, accidents majeurs et crises, ou le cas échéant sur des simulations de crises, exercices de crise...» which is far away from Accreditation of Prior Learning.
