Spectator vs viewer As a general rule, in my experience, the word "spectator" is used when what is being seen is live human action and "viewer" when it is artworks or images. So we have spectators at sports events and at live theatrical and/or musical performances (though "audience" is more usual there), but "viewers" is used for TV and film (again, audience is often used), and also, usually, for the visual arts. The "espectador" at an art exhibition is normally called a viewer rather than a spectator. This is not necessarily a hard-and-fast rule, but I think it is the usual trend.

I think it means a sort of theatrical distancing.
