French term

social/très social

French to English Other Law: Contract(s) Rental contrats
Hi there,

I am translating a rental contract from French (France) into English (Australia) and the start of the contract reads as follows:

CONTRAT DE LOCATION
Logement conventionné social/très social ANAH

I'd appreciate guidance on the translation of 'social/très social' in the above context. I have come up with the following English translation so far; however, the use of 'social/very social' does not sound very natural in English.

RENTAL CONTRAT
ANAH* social/very social housing agreement

*ANAH = Agence Nationale de l'Habitat = French National Housing Agency

Many thanks in advance for your assistance!

Discussion

FPC Nov 2, 2022:
Some more refs. I wonder whether all in all, making allowances for differences between countries, this might fall under UK social housing, even if the abode is privately owned by a private landlord if we interpret the "social" loosely. Of course in English the intensifier "very" meaning more than usual, exceedingly, with "social" doesn't sound good.

agree AllegroTrans : Yes, best option as we cannot say for sure that it is subsidised

Precisely. The "bailleurs sociaux" are simply charging low rents.
agree Eliza Hall : This works. But so does "subsidized," as FPC suggested.

Thanks, though I disagree with FPC.

neutral AllegroTrans : It may be subsidised, but it could be provided by a charity or a philanthropist

agree Eliza Hall : I disagree with AllegroTrans on this, given how France works (not a huge philanthropic or charitable tradition, most funding is from the state) and the fact that even in the US, with its philanthropic tradition, affordable housing is paid for by the state

capped/heavily capped rent

Hello
If you delve into the convention (see reference), they speak of plafonds for the rent in return for certain tax relief granted to the landlord. So it's not really a subsidy as we normally understand that term.
Alas, we also have to drop "social (housing)" as that is housing provided by the government and local councils and it's not that either as this is in the private sector.
So I've used "rent" for "social" as in my second reference
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : Can't see how this is an imptovement on "affordable" which, at least in UK, is the standard term

I think it's okay as a suggestion because it reflects exactly the mechansim behind the French scheme (not subsidized). On the Gov.UK site for affordable housing, they say that figures produced are "irrespective of funding mechanism"
agree Adrian MM. : In Oz, socially secure at a (very) low rent. Now in the UK, an assured tenancy ('rental contract') as shorthand for security of tenure with Rent - now Housing - Act protection https://www.justice.act.gov.au/renting-and-occupancy-laws
