French term

jeu à terre

French to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Futsal 5-a-side football
Context: This is from the rules for a 5-a-side football tournament. Earlier in the text, it states that the rules are based on Futsal rules.

COUP FRANC
Si une équipe commet plus de cinq fautes (ex. : faute de main involontaire, jeu à terre, obstruction, etc.) en une mi-temps, son adversaire obtient un coup franc sans mur à 10 mètres du but.

From what I've read it appears to means something like you shouldn't play the ball when you're down on the ground, but I can't find an English equivalent term

playing the ball (while/whilst) on the ground

It's allowed in football/soccer but not in futsal.

"Players are NOT allowed to play the ball whilst on the ground, except for the Goalkeeper who can only do so within their goal area."
https://scorelinesports.com.au/futsal-rules/

"Players cannot play the ball whilst on the ground. If this happens, it will result in a free kick awarded to the opposition."
https://www.futsalindoorsoccer.com.au/index.php/rules

"Common Fouls
• Fouls that are not card worthy, but are warnings by the officials, and if they continue could result in a card.
o Kicking an opponent
o Tripping
o Unnecessary contact
o Illegal use of the wall and or boards
o Pushing
o Tackling from behind
o Holding
o Hand ball
o Playing the ball while on the ground"

agree Conor McAuley : Your point about 11-a-side football is correct too, surprisingly to me: "However, playing the ball while on the ground in itself is not an infringement of the laws", only if it's dangerous

Thanks Conor! Yep, only when it amounts to dangerous play, not by itself.

playing (the ball) while on the ground

Un joueur est à terre, mais joue quand même le ballon avec ses pieds. Jeu à terre

This came up the other day during play and I cannot get a straight answer except for “playing the ball on the ground is against the rules."

grounding

A specific term can be this.
In terms of a foul, it could be a player who, when fouled, simulates and stays down.
