@ Asker Almost impossible without more context, as the term as it stands ia ambiguous.
It depends if it means 'the end of the idler', or 'the end of something else that is nearest to the idler' — or even, simply, 'the end that is not the driven end'. You will need to look at diagrams or photos to try and understand how this machine works and what does what.
