French term

la civilisation technicienne

French to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
A reference from a work by E.A. Gutkind (in English, The Twilight of Cities), in which urban decline is attributed apparently to "le développement de la mobilité et de la civilisation technicienne."

I cannot find the original reference from the book translation anywhere online, and am hesitating as to translating as "technology civilization" or "technological civilization" or a different term. I'm working on the translation of an academic article, essentially a review of the literature on urban shrinkage.

I would appreciate input, especially from anyone who knows the term as used here in French social science/social commentary.

I went with "technological civilization" Comments above were correct - any digital or computer reference was anachronistic with regard to the text in question. Thanks to all the commenters for your assistance!

agree on technical civilization Knowing a bit about Gutkind, I would wager that here technicienne means expert or highly skilled, in this case that as society becomes more reliant on technology, a technical civilization forms. i.e. class of experts and people working in highly skilled jobs who are more socially mobile and this has a negative impact upon cities.

"technological civilization" is the term Gutkind used -- in 1962. Back when most technology was still analog.:-)

Google Books shows another possibility On p.92 of the book (in ch. 2) there's what appears to be a whole section titled "The Price of a Technological Civilization." In addition to that, there are a few refs to "technical civilization" (p.80, p. 81, p.95). You hadn't mentioned "technical civilization" in your post, so just wanted to draw your attention to that. Google Books allows access only to small snippets, so difficult to make out much context.

Got the idea as we do talk about the digital revolution. Google give some confirmation but not as much as I would have imagined
