Spanish term

cuchillo

Spanish to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Formula one
Hi all,
Does anyone have any idea what the cuchillos are in this sentence:
Alonso volvió a arrancar como un tiro, se zampó a Di Resta y a Rosberg en un acelerón y abordó el octavo a la primera variante, que trazó de forma impoluta, lejos de los cuchillos.
It is taken from an article written in El Pais about the Italian Grand Prix
I've trawled the internet but can find no reference to cuchillos in formula one slang
I think it might refer to the red and white lines painted on the side of the chicane.
I hope there are some motor racing fanatics out there that can help me.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Sounds logical Yes, I think you both may be right. I've read some articles that talk about racing "con el cuchillo entre los dientes" and another called the "carrera de los cuchillos largos". Let's see if anyone else has any ideas

clashes

Just a guess, but it may refer to the pilot breaking away from the pack and thus being far from the risky fight for a good position when approaching a curve... I'm not a big racing fan but I have followed some races on local TV in Spain and I don't recall 'cuchillo' as referring to any physical element on the track, but it is used often referring to aggressive competition in certain situations.

well clear of any danger

Could it not just be a metaphor based on the idea of a fight with knives. So it's saying that he was not close enough to his rivals for their to be any danger. Perhaps a Spanish-speaking person could confirm this.
