Yes, a similar situation in our case. A manufacturer was testing the quality of two of our customers, and we are the preferred Spanish vendor for both of them, so we did the test twice. Of course we did not tell anyone what was going on, as our dealings with one customer are completely separate from our dealings with another customer. Confidentiality is a must in all situations.

It happened to me several times. I am not specialized, so in my case it is related to the minor language pair.
In one of those cases, when I got the text from the second agency, it had been edited by the end client (introducing lots of mistakes, it wasn't his native language, he just "did" Dutch at university for one year). I said nothing and just changed most things as they were before.

In another case the end client didn't trust the first agency, which was a friend of mine ("they are expensive, but are they GOOD"?). The problem was that the second agency, was also a friend and a bit more expensive. They offered me to re-translate and to invoice the whole thing. I just changed some comma's and a word or so and sent it back. I don't know how it ended up, but the whole translation should have cost about 40 or 50 cents a word, and it was just a simple marketing text with a menu.
The problem is the lack of confidentiality of course. Both agencies are competitors, and any information is business critical information. I think we should be very careful about that. ▲ Collapse

When I worked in an in-house translation service, more than once it happened to me that a document I translated came back to me again in the original language with a fresh request for translation (the person distributing the jobs didn't have the habit of checking for this). So I, as translator, would be the first to notice that something seemed familiar... None of us had any incentive to do a re-translation, so of course we would ferret out the previous translation and send it back to the reques... More and more often I receive my own translations as reference documents. And the glossaries which I compile when cooperating on a major project with other translators tend to bounce back after several months. Sometimes with new entries, sometimes with comments from the customer.

Because I frequently translate construction standards for end clients (which are standardization organizations, not agencies), on several occasions I've been asked to translate the same standard twice. This usually happens when a new edition of a particular standard is published.

I was once asked to proofread my own translation by the very client who gave it to me in the first place! I think it was due to confusion in the wake of a Project Manager leaving work, and everything was quickly and professionally sorted out.

It has never happened to me, but I have proof read some really poor translations. The other translator then sought revenge when they had to proof read my work. After reading their comments it was obvious they weren't a native speaker!

As translator of a minority language, more than once I was asked to check my own translation. Of course I always told the client that I was the original translator of the text.
