מכל המוניות השחורות, המבהיקות כראי, שהמתינו בנמל התעופה של ליסבון, אצה לקראתנו ווקסהול מרופטת וצהובה, כאילו ארבה רק לנו. הנהג, גבר זקן, קיבל את הכתובת ודהר כמטורף בחום העז, בלי מזגן, חלונותיו פתוחים, מקלל את כל הנהגים. "לוקו", צעק על כל מי שעקף אותו, עד שנתקענו בפקק. "טרפיק", צחק. לא היה לו מושג איפה הסמטה שבה חיכה לנו החדר השכור ושעה ארוכה ניסה לברר עם נהגים אחרים. ואחר כך נהג מהר, מרקד בין רכבים, פקקים וכיכרות. "פאק", "שיט", צעק באנגלית רצוצה, טיפס במעלה תלול של הר ובלם בדרך נס, מול הבית ב- Rua de sao gens. כך נחתנו בבירת ארץ שטרם הכרנו, ושבה נתחיל, מהר יותר מכל מה שחלמנו, להקים את ביתנו, 400 קילומטרים צפונית מהלוקו, הטרפיק וליסבון, סמוך למקום שבו נשפך נהר המיניו אל האוקיינוס האטלנטי.
כשנה אחרי מסע ליסבון, אני כבר עומד על רצפת עץ בלב בית פורטוגלי ישן, ערוף גג, ומקלל את הקרפינטיירה. אין תשובה בנייד של הנגר ג'ורג'. אין קול ואין עונה. איפה לעזאזל גג העץ שהבטיח ג'ורג' לפני הגשם? האדריכל ג'ילברטו, שמנהל את העבודה, פורש כפיו ופניו מלאי מצוקה רבה אף ממצוקתנו. כשגשמי הזעף של החורף קרבים וקירות הגרניט העתיקים שעוביים כמטר חשופים, אני חולם בלילות על בית שמעיין נובע מקירותיו. יש בו רצפות עץ ומטבח ישן, ארונות וקירות, דלתות וחלונות. אין גג, ובלי גג בית הוא כלום. הפקר לרוח ולגשמים.

בכל בוקר נפתח שער הברזל של החצר אל דממה. אני עובד שם לבדי כמו למלא את החסר. אני אדון הבית ופועלו היומי: אני שותל ונוטע בגינה קטנה שיצרתי בפתח מחסן, שיהיה לסטודיו, שהוא לבדו מתמלא חפצים והופך למקום חי. אני נוטע שתיל רך של בוגנוויליה שתטפס בבוא היום על הקיר. אני בא והולך, יום אחרי יום. עד שבוקר אחד, כמתוך כובעו של קוסם, צצה לה משאית הנגרים הלבנה של ג'ורג'.
היא עמוסה בקורת עץ אורן ארוכה כתורן וקורות קטנות ממנה. וג'ורג' מופיע, כאילו תמיד היה בחצר, פורק עם אנשיו את המטען, נושא על כתפו את קורות העץ הכבדות. הנגרים גונחים תחת כובד העץ. הם מניחים במחסן חלק מהן לבל ייפגעו מן הגשם. כאילו הרגע גילו שהחורף קרב והם חרדים מאוד מנזקיו.
"מחר נבוא", אומר ג'ורג' בלכתו.
מאז אותה הופעה, בכל בוקר כשאני נכנס לחצר, נתקלות רגלי בקורת העץ המהוקצעת, העצומה כאורך הבית, שמוטלת באלכסון. אחרות, קצרות ממנה, נחות במחסן. רק בראשית דצמבר, כשאני מגיע אחר הצהריים, חונים שני רכבי אופל קורסה ישנים ליד השער. נושא עיני אל פסגת הבית הערוף, אני רואה כי לכל אורכו מתוחה הקורה הגדולה, שִׁדרת הגג החדש, שמחברת בין שני משולשי הבטון של שוליו. תוך יומיים צומח כובע חדש לבית ופרנקלין שב עם פועליו לסיים את המלאכה.
רק אז מגיע המבול ומציף יערות וחצרות, בתים פרוצים ללא גגות ודירי כבשים וכבישים.
והבית יבש.
Translation - Hebrew Prelude to a home
Of all the dark glossy taxis waiting at the Lisbon airport, it was a single dingy yellow Vauxhall that immediately lunged at us as if it had been lurking in wait. Upon receiving the designated address, its elderly driver dashed off energetically in the maddening heat, windows rolled down, swearing at other hapless drivers.
“Loco!” he screams at anyone attempting to overtake him, that is until we hit a traffic jam. “Traffic,” he chuckles. Striving to locate the alleyway of our rented room, he engages in lengthy debates with other drivers, until finally racing on, zigzagging between cars, traffic jams and plazas. “Fuck! Shit!” is the extent of his charming broken English. Finally, we go up a steep hill before miraculously coming to a stop in front of the appropriate house on the Rua de Sao Gens.
Thus we came to land in the capital of this yet unfamiliar land, where shortly, sooner than we could have dreamed, we would begin to set up our new home. But this was to happen 400 km north of the Loco, Traffic and Lisbon, where the Minho river flows into the Atlantic.
A year after this trip to Lisbon finds me standing on a wooden floor at the heart of a roofless old Portuguese house, cursing the carpinteiros. Carpenter George’s phone keeps ringing to no avail. Where in God’s name is the wooden roof that George had assured me would be in place come the rainy season? In his role as the work manager, Architect Gilberto throws his arms up in acute distress at the situation: As the heavy winter rains approach and the old meter-wide granite walls remain exposed, I dream at night of fountains springing from the walls. Our beautiful home has wooden floors and an old kitchen, cabinets and walls, doors and windows. But no roof. And a house without a roof is no house, left to the mercy of the wind and rains.
Gilberto says, “Even if it does rain on the house, it should be alright. The rain will wash off a hundred years’ of accumulted dust.” Our architect manages to find solace even in the most tragic of times. This attitude is what constitues the local rizz: the customer is always made to feel at ease, never brought to the point of anger, which in, turn puts the locals at ease. With time I realize that these continuous delays, vanishing carpenters and other forgotten promises all form part of that easy Portuguese nature and slow-living. It seems the present is always yearning for the past, and the future? Well, we’ll see, maybe next Monday?
“Around these parts, carpenters are as rare as astronauts”, Gilberto confides. Many of them left during the troubled years when there was no work to be found. Some immigrated to France. Now that demand is on the rise, it is difficult to locate master artisans who can manipulate the giant beams used to construct these durable wood- and tile roofs.
“Some of them work half the month in France. They fly back-and-forth so often that business-class is always full of upgraded Portuguese carpenters.”
I hearten at the thought of our George, comfortably resting in his business-class seat, that is, until the idea occurs to me that our stone and tile mason, Senhor Franklin, is waiting for the carpenters to finish so he can begin his work. It appears Portuguese workers are as tight as cogwheels: one must put up before another can take down. All are engaged in several houses at the same time - constantly skipping between sites.
September, October, November approaches. There is a miracle of uninterrupted azure autumn skies. Each morning I look up at the Candemil sky, praying it remain clear and dry, knowing full well that we will eventually require the aid of the peers of Joseph the carpenter –regardless of how long this miracle lasts. At the end of November, light rain begins to fall. A dying sun filters through disrobing vines. The beauty of a golden autumn hangs on to the branches just a moment longer, the leaves as exquisite as doomed flowers. The ongoing demise of autumn is indeed a time of grace, but I long to hear the bustle of construction, the drumming of hammers, the sweet music of electric saws and the song of the power drill.
Every morning, the iron gate of the yard opens into absolute silence. I work alone, filling up the absence. I am both master of this house and its manual labourer. I plant and tend the little garden I have sown at the entrance to a storage room intended for a studio. The studio itself is filling up with objects and taking on a life. I plant a young bougainvillaea seedling instructing it to climb up the wall. Thus I come and go, day in day out. Until one morning, as if out a magician’s hat, George’s white pick-up appears, and in it is a tall pine beam, high as a mast, and several other smaller ones. And there is George in my yard as if he had always been there, busy unloading the charge. His carpenters carry the heavy beams, bowing under the weight of the wood. They place some of the wood inside the storage room where the rain can do no damage. It is as if they’ve only now come to realize the imminence of winter and fear its wrath.
“We will return tomorrow,” says George as he exists the yard.
