Off topic: Relaxing summer reading tips? Thread poster: Els Hoefman
|
I'm looking forward to some relaxing weeks off in July and I hope to be able to read a few books (although that will be hard with a two-year-old and a one-year-old around all day).
Which books would you recommend for some relaxing summer reading?

In what languages do you read?
A book that springs to mind right away is 'Blue Highways' by William Least Heat Moon. It is not very recent (1982), but a very nice read. Available in English and Dutch (the translation is quite good).

Hi Margreet,
two books I read recently I can really comment. I only know the German titels and I am not sure if they have been translated yet.
- Der Geschmack von Apfelkernen, Katharina Hagena
- Für jede Lösung ein Problem, Kerstin Gier
Have a nice holiday!

The Black Book
It's certainly been translated into English and several other languages. It's not relaxing - it's overwhelming - it makes you travel, dream, laugh, cry, think...
Just, take care on the beach - I've already got sunburnt because of it...

Pynchon's latest 2kg volume will keep you busy for a couple of weeks. It might not be everyone's idea of relaxation, but its certainly a wonderful read!

Only 160 pages long but a *true masterpiece* - like everything else he's written, Atonement, Saturday, Enduring Love (my all-time favourite novel) and many others.
Bill Bryson, of course | Jun 5, 2008 |
Travel + humour!
The one I liked best is "Down Under" (about Australia).
And travelled to Australia after having read it.
Nice holiday to you! | | |

An amazing book, an easy read, but really makes you think. My favourite in the last 10 years.
The author is the wife of Paul Auster - she is actually better than him!

Niraja Nanjundan (X) Local time: 04:28 German to English Paulo Coelho... | Jun 5, 2008 |
...makes relaxing and thought provoking reading. Try "Like a Flowing River" or "Manual of The Warrior of Light."
Short stories are also good for the holidays. I recently read a nice collection by Doris Lessing.
Happy reading! | | |
Audrey Niffenegger: The Time Traveller's Wife | Jun 5, 2008 |
If you haven't read this book yet - it's a fantastic read. Intriguing science fiction concept paired with a touching love story - I loved it and couldn't put it down.
Happy reading and enjoy your time off!

A not-too-taxing read (important if your brain's on holiday and you've got kids running about), but extremely interesting and poignant. Set in rural war-time Nova Scotia.
Jack Doughty United Kingdom Local time: 22:58 Russian to English + ... In memoriam The Secret of Ivan the Terrible, by Piotr Homyakov | Jun 5, 2008 |
Political & crime thriller. I translated it last year. It was available on Amazon.com last time I looked. When I read the printed copy, I found it still had a few typing errors in it, in spite of all my proofreading. I kept urging them to get another native English speaker to proofread it, but they never did.
Andrea Riffo Chile Local time: 19:58 English to Spanish + ...
Anything by Julian Barnes.
