English to Hausa: Back Pain General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English Source Text in English:
Backaches are so common that it is fair to say that most people suffer from several acute short attacks and one or two longer-lasting ones in their lifetime. Only a minority of these attacks are due to very serious disease but all are extremely tedious, preventing the leading of a normal life for weeks, months and sometimes even years. Backaches cause more time off work than most diseases and, like any long-lasting chronic pain, may demoralize and depress the sufferer greatly.

Bio
I'm a native Hausa speaker from northern Nigeria, the territory with the largest Hausa speakers in Africa and the world, and whose demographic spread cuts across nearly a dozen African countries while its overall speaker strength borders close to two hundred (200) million across the continent, representing a huge market for localisation and the translation industry. Besides Hausa, I'm a fluent speaker of English while my French and Arabic are fairly good enough, along with some knowledge of Swahili. My academic background is in Linguistics (PhD), a subject I've taught at university level for close to four decades. My specialization is in Sociolinguistics and within this field, I've a special interest in Hausa Cultural Linguistics for which I have written a book titled "AN AFRICAN LANGUAGE EXPERIENCE: ASPECTS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE AMONG THE HAUSA-SPEAKING PEOPLE OF NORTHERN NIGERIA. The book was published in 2017 by Partridge Africa Publishers and is currently available at Amazon.com. In it, I discussed linguacultural problems as they relate to translation particularly from the perspective of Hausa language. I'm also the Director of Africa Language & Communication Academy (ALCA), a translation and language teaching hub based in Sokoto, northern Nigeria. Besides translation and teaching, we do transliteration, text-editing and transcription particularly with regard to the Ajami, which is the system of writing indigenous African languages using Arabic characters for which large amounts of manuscript exist in Africa. At ALCA, we look forward to partner with organisations and agencies with interest in developing African languages technologies.
