Translation - English Speed Essential in FTA Talks
On January 31, Tokyo launched its first joint study group meetings with Indonesia and Chile with the aim of concluding economic partnership agreements (EPA) centered on free trade agreements (FTA). Japan is highly likely to enter into negotiations with these countries following ongoing talks with Thailand, Malaysia and South Korea, advancing Japan’s FTA strategy. As economic cooperation accelerates in Asia, Japan’s partnership strategy is being tested in terms of its content and speed.

English to Japanese: Why the Distortion in Nuclear Armament Controversy? General field: Other Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Source text - English 先月号で 、明文化されていない「 国是」である非核三原則の行方 が気になる、と書いたら、本当に非核日本の行く先に少し黒っぽい雲が漂い始めた。
Translation - Japanese Why the Distortion in Nuclear Armament Controversy?
After I wrote in last month’s issue about my concerns regarding the future of the three nonnuclear principles, Japan’s implicit “national credo,” I actually started seeing a little dark clouds floating in the future of now-nonnuclear Japan.
Two heavyweights of the ruling coalition are stirring up a controversy by repeatedly referring to a “recommended discussion on nuclear armament.” They are Minister of Foreign Affairs Taro Aso and Policy Research Council Chairman Shoichi Nakagawa. Their contention can be summarized as follows: since the North Korean dictator, who cannot be understood by the ordinary way, has dared to test a nuclear bomb, Japan should adapt to such circumstances and permit open discussion regarding the possibility of Japan’s future nuclear armament.
As party-line-following politicians who hold key posts within the governing party, the two themselves stress that their position on the issue is to abide by the three nonnuclear principles. This is confusing, since as influential politicians they wouldn’t need to recommend to anyone any discussion of nuclear armament if their stance is to firmly support the three principles under existing conditions. I would hope they follow their own policy and, without making a fuss, persevere in their political tasks.
