My First Encounter
The Spirit-filled life. I was thirty-two years old the first time I heard anyone
anyone use that term. When I was growing up, the Holy Spirit was always referred
to as the Holy Ghost. As a child, I thought it sounded spooky - not something I was
really interested in knowing much about. I remember thinking, God is my Father, and Jesus is
His Son. I can relate to them. But what is the Holy Ghost? And who needs it?
For a long time I pretty much decided to settle for two out of the three.
There was another reason I shied away from the Holy Spirit. I grew up in a church
where He was never mentioned. My pastor didn't explain who He was pr preach sermons about Him.
The Christians I knew who did talk about Him were so strange that I assumed getting involved with
the Holy Ghost meant I would have to be like them. I wanted no part of that.
So I was content to worship the Father and pray to the Son - and leave the Holy Spirit
for someone else to worry about.
It wasn't until I was in seminary that the Holy Spirit became a recognized factor in my life. I say
"recognized factor" because as I look back, it is clear to me that He was definitely there all the time.
I can remember several occasions when the Holy Spirit revealed things to me
without my knowing who He was.

Első találkozásom
A Szentlélekkel teli élet. Harminckét éves voltam, amikor először
hallottam, hogy ezt a kifejezést használta valaki. Gyerekkoromban
a Szentlelket mindig Szent Szellemnek nevezték. Kisfiúként azt gondoltam,
hogy ez olyan kisértetiesen hangzik - nem igazán olyasmi, amiről többet
akartam volna tudni. Emlékszem, igy gondolkoztam: Isten a mennyei
Édesapám, Jézus pedig az Ő fia. Ezt a két dolgot össze tudom kapcsolni.
De mi a Szent Szellem? És kinek van rá szüksége? Hosszú ideig úgy gondoltam, hogy megelégszem hármójuk helyett kettővel.
Másik oka is volt, amiért elbújtam a Szentlélek elől. Olyan gyülekezetben
nőttem fel, ahol soha nem esett szó Róla. Lelkészünk egyszer sem
magyarázta el vagy prédikált arról, ki is a Szentlélek.
Azon ismerős hivők, akik beszéltek Róla, olyan furcsának tűntek
számomra, hogy azt hittem, ha kapcsolatba kerülök a Szentlélekkel,
olyan leszek, mint ők. Ezt egyáltalán nem akartam. Igy hát megelégedtem
azzal, hogy az Atyát istenitettem, a Fiúhoz imádkoztam – a Szentlelket
pedig más gondjára biztam.
Csak a szemináriumi éveim alatt vált a Lélek „felismert tényezővé”
az életemben. Igy nevezem, „felismert tényező”, hiszen ha
visszatekintek, világos, hogy azelőtt is mindig ott volt.
Emlékszem néhány esetre, amikor a Szentlélek anélkül tárt fel előttem
dolgokat, hogy tudatában lettem volna, ki is Ő valójában.
