English to French: Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association - Introductory Letter - Teachers' Zone
Source text - English The chief goal of the Teachers’ Zone is to provide educators, students and the Canadian public in general the opportunity to become more aware of the role our Canadian soldiers played in the Battle of Hong Kong in World War II. Until recently, the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941 was not generally known by Canadians, and it wasn’t until the voices of the veterans still living were heard that we began to realize the importance of our having a better understanding of the ways that all of us have been affected by what went on those many years ago.
As an organization, HKVCA has made great strides in developing the means of engaging the public – students in particular- most recently with the use of the Ten Lessons, titled “Canada in Hong Kong: 1941-1945 – The Forgotten Heroes”, and the CD-ROM recently released called “The Battle of Hong Kong”. Both of these efforts have had success in Canadian classrooms across the country, and that success is building.
In addition, the “HKVCA Cross Canada Writing Contest” begun just last year, has proven a valuable tool in helping High School students relate to what individual soldiers experienced in the many dreadful situations they were forced to endure in battle and in the prison camps. To expand our High School students’ participation, the Writing Contest package is available in both French and English. The Second Edition of the Writing Contest, 2010/2011 is now underway. With many imaginative stories well-told in a successful First Edition, the Second Edition will surely provide even more excellent opportunities for our young storytellers.
We do thank the many educators who have provided us with valuable material for teachers to use in their classrooms, as well as those active individuals within the HKVCA organization who are working vigourously to spread the telling of the Hong Kong story.

Translation - French Le but principal de la zone à l'intention des enseignants est de fournir aux éducateurs, aux étudiants et au public canadien en général l'occasion de mieux comprendre le rôle qu'ont joué nos soldats canadiens dans la bataille de Hong Kong pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Jusqu'à récemment, la bataille de Hong Kong en 1941 n'était pas bien connue du peuple canadien, et ce n'est que lorsqu'on a entendu les voix des anciens combattants toujours vivants qu'on a commencé à se rendre compte à quel point il était important qu'on comprenne mieux de quelle façon nous avons tous été affectés par ce qui s'est passé il y tant d'années.
L’ACACBHK a très bien réussi le développement de plusieurs outils destinés à intéresser le public, surtout les étudiants. Les exemples les plus récents sont l’utilisation des Dix leçons, intitulés « Le Canada à Hong Kong : de 1941 à 1945. Les héros oubliés », et le CD-ROM lancé récemment, intitulé « La bataille de Hong Kong ». Ces deux efforts ont connu le succès en salle de classe partout au Canada et ce succès s’accroît de plus en plus.
De plus, le concours de rédaction pancanadien de l’ACACBHK, lancé tout juste l’année dernière, s’est avéré un outil précieux pour aider les étudiants d’école secondaire à comprendre ce qu’ont vécu certains soldats dans plusieurs situations horribles sur le champ de bataille et dans les camps de prisonniers. Afin d’augmenter la participation de nos étudiants de niveau secondaire, la trousse du concours de rédaction est disponible en français tout comme en anglais. La deuxième édition du concours de rédaction, celle de 2010-11, est en cours actuellement. Vu les nombreux contes pleins d’imagination et si bien écrits qu’on a pu voir dans le cadre d’une première édition très réussie, la deuxième édition fournira sûrement encore davantage d’excellentes occasions à nos jeunes conteurs.
Nous remercions certainement les nombreux éducateurs qui nous ont fourni du materiel précieux à l’intention des enseignants pour que ces derniers l’utilisent en salle de classe, ainsi que ces individus actifs au sein de l’ACACBHK qui travaillent si vigoureusement pour mieux faire connaître l’histoire de la bataille de Hong Kong.
