English to Khmer (Central): Using multimedia in Cambodian teacher training General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Source text - English This manual was developed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, in cooperation with VVOB and RTTC Kandal. Its objective is to improve science teacher training by introducing multimedia applications in teacher training.
The main goal of this manual is to provide teacher trainers with a practical working instrument to learn how to use multimedia in teacher training practice. The visual content present in multimedia is a strong support for enhancing students’ understanding of abstract topic matter. When used in a pedagogically integrated manner, multimedia improves teaching and supports the acquisition of critical thinking.
Books have been the main medium to transmit knowledge for over 500 years, and remain one of the most important ways to reflect knowledge. They are portable; no power supply is needed, and have a long lifetime. Books were and are the friend of every man in search of knowledge. The problem with books was access to them. In schools, students generally had their textbooks. To provide a better and more open access to information, libraries were installed in big cities, and later in smaller villages. The books that were considered to be the most relevant for society were purchased for the library, and people rejoiced when they could share this knowledge.
In the 20th century, and especially after the invention of the transistor in the late 1950s, the first computers were invented. These were calculating machines, designed to execute complex calculations. When in the 1980s the personal computer came to the market, equipped with a screen to read from and a keyboard and a mouse to communicate with the machine, a revolution started. Few would have thought that 25 years later computers would be in every office; that people would learn how to type on these complex keyboards; or even that these machines would in a few years be reduced to handheld formats, which can fit in a pocket. Yet that was exactly what happened. And it was just the beginning. While the computer proved to be very useful, it remained a machine that allowed the user to perform some simple operations like writing text, making calculations and playing games. But it was cumbersome to share this information.
The introduction of the internet to the general public in the beginning of the 1990s had an instantaneous success. Instead of using letters, people could now communicate with people at the other side of the globe using email. The quantity of available information exploded. This has an enormous impact on the way we learn. Before, we could only access knowledge through books, and we would study what was available. As you cannot carry around books everywhere, studying was focused heavily on root learning, memorizing, storing information to combine it mentally.
Nowadays, information is at our fingertips. Internet connectivity is available all around the world, and computers are practically ubiquitous on a global scale. Therefore, students are expected less to remember all the information they read, but instead process it selectively, make sense of it. The emphasis has shifted to understanding, applying the knowledge to the real world. There are certainly disadvantages to this way of learning; e.g. students who heavily rely on the internet for knowledge might not be remember the finer details of a process. However, by applying the knowledge they find on the internet to real life situations, they are likely to construct their knowledge, and come to a better understanding, which reinforces memorizing in turn.
While in Cambodia the information era is making a steady progress, we hope that this manual may contribute to an improved use of computers in education. In this manual, we will specifically focus on the various types of multimedia. Multimedia are a combination of visual (often moving) images, sound and text, which are combined to provide a user friendly representation of a learning subject. As we will see in this text, multimedia are not used to replace any classical lesson text, but are instead mostly developed for situations in which the use of text has obvious shortcomings.
Throughout the manual teacher trainers will be taught what multimedia are, what their benefits and shortcomings are, and how they can best put them to use in their classes to improve students’ understanding.
The Ministry hopes that you all will make the best use of these materials to improve the quality of science education.
English to Khmer (Central): Climate Change General field: Science Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Source text - English Climate change is already happening and represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet. The European Union is committed to working constructively for a global agreement to control climate change, and is leading the way by taking ambitious action of its own.
The warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level. The Earth's average surface temperature has risen by 0.76° C since 1850. Most of the warming that has occurred over the last 50 years is very likely to have been caused by human activities.
In its Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), published in 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projects that, without further action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the global average surface temperature is likely to rise by a further 1.8-4.0°C this century, and by up to 6.4°C in the worst case scenario. Even the lower end of this range would take the temperature increase since pre-industrial times above 2°C - the threshold beyond which irreversible and possibly catastrophic changes become far more likely.
