II. Objetivos y justificación de la propuesta
General: Reducir en un 10% la desnutrición crónica en comunidades vulnerables de los 5
municipios seleccionados de alta Verapaz, en el periodo 2012-2016.
Específicos:
1. Promover el diagnóstico y tratamiento oportuno de enfermedades que causan
desnutrición, en base a las prácticas y tradiciones ancestrales de los pueblos originarios.
2. Facilitar herramientas y habilidades para la mejora de la alimentación, involucrando
tecnologías apropiadas en base a la cultura y tradición de los pueblos y el respeto al
ambiente.
3. Facilitar herramientas de participación ciudadana para la incidencia política tendientes a
mejorar la nutrición de las comunidades metas con pertinencia cultural.
4. Oportunidades de acceso a educación integral a los niños de familias a través de becas y
atención psicoeducativa.
III. Justificación de la propuesta
La UNO asegura que Guatemala tiene la mayor tasa de desnutrición infantil del continente, con el
49.3% de los niños menores de cinco años padecen de desnutrición crónica, UNICEF ha afirmado
carias oportunidades que Guatemala es el país centroamericano que registra la mayor tasa de
desnutrición infantil de continente y es el sexto lugar de desnutrición crónica a nivel mundial,
cuando se trata de población indígena, esa cifra llega al 70% y algunos municipios de población
indígena donde la incidencia en desnutrición es del 82%, el Programa Mundial de Alimento
señala a Guatemala como el país centroamericano como mayor índice de desnutrición infantil
con un 54.5%, seguido de Honduras (30.1%), Belice (22%), Nicaragua (21.7%), El Salvador (19.2),
Panamá (19.2%) y Costa Rica (5.6%). La Organización Panamericana de la Salud OPS coincide
afirmando de a acuerdo al resultado de su última encuesta realizado en Guatemala, Guatemala
sigue encabezando esta siniestra lista en Centroamérica. El vicepresidente del Guatemala, Rafael
Espada, un afamado cardiólogo que ha hecho carrera en Estados Unidos y se encarga de mejorar
la infraestructura de Salud en el Gobierno actual, en el marco del último acto por el Día Mundial
de la Alimentación ratificó “es una de las mayores vergüenza del país” el elevado del desnutrición
crónica que afecta a la mitad de la población de niños guatemalteco. Del total del índice de 50% de
niños guatemalteco con desnutrición crónica la mayoría más del 70% son niños indígenas, siendo
los indígenas más de la mitad de los 13 millones de habitantes, son también el sector dominante
en las mediciones de pobreza en el país (55% de guatemaltecos viven en pobreza y 15% en
pobreza extrema). De los 22 departamentos del país, 20 registran algún tipo de desnutrición. Alta
Verapaz y San Marcos son los que tienen mayor número de comunidades en niveles variados de
riesgo (972 y 967). La prensa libre de mayor circulación en el país (30-12-2011) afirma que para
el año 2012 “la producción de granos se mantendrá con déficit secundado por la Organización de
Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO en inglés)
El Programa para Reducción de Desnutrición Crónica 2006-2016 promovido por el Secretario de
Seguridad Alimentario y Nutricional en Guatemala en el marco del trabajo de la SESAN, El PRDC
afirma que la inseguridad alimentaria y nutricional se da cuando la disponibilidad alimentaria es
insuficiente y/o inestable, la capacidad de adquisitiva de la familia es baja, el comportamiento
alimentario es inadecuado y las condiciones sanitarias son insuficientes. La desnutrición
proteínica-proteínica-energética y por deficiencia de micronutrientes, tales como el hierro,
yodo, vitamina A, ácido fólico, lógicamente asociado a diversas condiciones de la población y los
programas que sugiere que sea abordado para esta reducción son; Servicios básicos de salud,
Educación Alimentaria y Nutricional, lactancia materna y alimentación complementaria, Agua y
saneamiento básico, mejoramiento de la economía familiar y organización comunitaria. Por otro
lado en Guatemala, las condiciones de extrema pobreza obligan a muchas familias a encontrar
su sustento no importando las condiciones como es el caso de las familias “guajeros”, poniendo
así en riesgo las condiciones de nutrición, salud y educación, transmitiendo este oficio a sus
hijos, quienes como forma de apoyo a sus padres también se dedican a este oficio, condiciones
nutricionales se sabe que el acceso a una alimentación adecuada, balanceada y nutritiva no es
la óptima en estos niños y el exponerse a la contaminación en las áreas de los basureros es una
amenaza a sus condiciones de salud así como las oportunidades a una educación integral también
está fuera del alcance de estas familias pues sus prioridades se vuelven de supervivencia y no de
formas de v ida.
Tomando en cuenta que la desnutrición es causado por dieta inadecuada o balanceada, problemas
con la digestión o la absorción, entre otros, en ese sentido la Coordinadora de ONG de Alta
Verapaz con sigla “CONGAV” en alianza con la Asociación Maya para el Desarrollo Integral
Comunitario “ASOMADIC” y la Alianza Nacional Comunitaria “ANC” implementará un Programa
de promoción de la nutrición en comunidades maya Q’eqchi y Poqomchi’, departamento de Alta
Verapaz, Guatemala Centro América.
El programa tiene como objetivo reducir la destrucción en un 10% en 5 municipios de Alta Verapaz
considerados con alta tasa de desnutrición y alta tasa de pobreza, variables que son relacionados a
la desnutrición.
IV. Descripción de las actividades
El programa tiene 4 componentes, el primero es reducir las consecuencias de las enfermedades
infecciosas sobre la nutrición del individuo en las familias y comunidades beneficiarias puedan
aplicar medidas sencillas de medicina tradicional que han resultado muy efectivas contra las
principales enfermedades infecciosas que causan mortalidad infantil y desnutrición.
El componente dos refiere a impactar en la alimentación directamente, tanto en su calidad
como en la disponibilidad. La alimentación carente como la alimentación de mala calidad es
la segunda causa de desnutrición (después de las infecciones) en Guatemala. En este sentido
se procurará incidir en las diferentes situaciones que permitirán que las familias mejoren su
alimentación en cantidad y calidad. La producción de alimentos orgánicos permitirá a las familias
no tener dependencia de los químicos que en sí mismos provocan deficiencias nutricionales. La
mayor producción permitirá que las familias dispongan de más alimentos frescos a nivel local.
La promoción de la alimentación sana se realizará a través de la educación y la reglamentación
comunitaria que permita que a través del derecho consuetudinario de los pueblos puedan decidir
qué comer y que productos se dispongan en la comunidad, en el entendido que la alimentación
tradicional es de mejor calidad que los alimentos chatarra y los alimentos industrializados que
son de baja calidad nutricional. A través de la reglamentación comunitaria (law inforcement)
se reforzará las mejoras en soporte a la educación en alimentación sana. Existen tecnologías
no respetuosas al medio ambiente, así como tecnologías respetuosas y promotoras del medio
ambiente. Las tecnologías utilizadas por grandes empresas suelen ser altamente contaminantes,
sin embargo existen tecnologías respetuosas del medio ambiente, esto implica el uso de abonos
orgánicos, que incluso permiten reciclar productos de desechos, preparación de la tierra (terrazas,
etc.), así como insumos y soporte para la mejora de las cosechas, como los sistemas de riego y
otros
El componente tres, es un eje transversal de acción como soporte de los componentes anteriores
en relación al involucramiento de las autoridades locales y nacionales en la resolución de
problemas, esto incluye la gestión de más presupuesto, mejores políticas públicas de nutrición
y alimentación y mejores políticas públicas en salud, especialmente en el tema de tratamiento
oportuno de enfermedades infecciosas, que son la principal causa de desnutrición en países
tropicales y Guatemala.
Componente 4: (Atención Integral –biopsicosocial-cognitivo) Implementación de becas a niños
hijos de familias con condiciones de extrema pobreza y en riesgo de desnutrición.
En este componente se pretende poder atacar el problema de una manera que oriente, provea
y facilite no sólo el acceso a una alimentación nutricional para combatir la desnutrición y reducir
los riesgos de salud sino también generar oportunidades con becas de estudio a los hijos en edad
escolar de estas familias para cambiar los patrones actuales. A continuación se presente un

General: Reduce by 10% the chronic malnutrition in vulnerable communities in the 5 selected
municipalities of Alta Verapaz, in the period 2012-2016.
Specifics:
1. Promote the diagnosis and treatment of pertinent problems that cause malnutrition,
based on the original traditional ancestral practices of the aforementioned peoples.
2. Provide tools and skills in order to improve nutrition, using appropriate technologies based
on their culture and traditions while maintaining a respect for the environment.
3. Provide tools for the participation of citizens and political advocacy in order to improve
the nutrition of the communities while working toward goals that are well suited for their
cultures.
4. Opportunities for access to basic education for the children of families through
scholarships as well as psychological care.
III. Rationale of the proposal
The UNO affirms that Guatemala has the highest rate of infant malnutrition on the continent,
with 49.3% of children under 5 years old suffering from chronic malnutrition, UNICEF has affirmed
that Guatemala has the highest rate of infant malnutrition on the continent and is ranked sixth
worldwide for its level of malnutrition, when accounting for only the indigenous population the
figure rises to a level of 70% and some indigenous communities have an incidence of malnutrition
as high as 82%. The (Programa Mundial de Alimento) points to Guatemala as the Central
American country with the greatest incidence of infant malnutrition with 54.5%, followed by
Honduras (30.1%), Belice (22%), Nicaragua (21.7%), El Salvador (19.2%), Panama (19.2%), and
Costa Rica (5.6%). La Organización Panamericana de Salud (OPS) confirmed these figures in their
last survey accomplished in Guatemala, Guatemala is the leader in this unfortunate list of Central
American Countries. The vice president of Guatemala, Rafael Espada, a famous Cardiologist
who had a career in the United States and brought the infrastructure of the current Government
Health agencies to a new level and ratified the Día Mundial de la Alimentación act declaring: “it
is one of the biggest shames of our country” the elevation of chronic malnutrition which affects
half of the population of Guatemalan children. Of the total 50% of Guatemalan children with
chronic malnutrition 70% are indigenous children, being that the indigenous peoples make up
make up more than half of the population 13 million people in Guatemala, and are the group that
dominates in the measurements of poverty in the country (55% of Guatemalans live in poverty
and 15% live in extreme poverty). Of the 22 departamentos of the country, 20 show some type of
malnutrition. Alta Verapaz and San Marcos have the greatest number of communities at various
high risk levels (972 and 967). La Prensa Libre, the most circulated newspaper, in the country (12/
30/2011) affirms that for the new 2012 “…there will continue to be a deficit in the production
of grains, as is reaffirmed by the Organization de Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la
Agricultura (FAO).
El Programa para Redución de Desnutrición Crónica (The Program for the Reduction of Chronic
Malnutrition) 2006-2016 promoted by the Secretary of Nutritional Security en Guatemala in the
work of SESAN, EL PRDC affirms that the instability of the food supply and nutrition occurs because
the available food supply is inadequate or unstable, the purchasing power of families is too low,
eating habits are poor, and conditions are not sufficiently sanitary. Malnutrition in the area of
energetic protein and micronutrients like iron, iodine, vitamin A, folic acid is logically associated
with diverse conditions in the population and the programs that will address the situation are:
Basic Health Services, Dietary and Nutritional Education, Breast Feeding with Accompanying
Nutrition for Nursing Mothers, Clean Water and Basic Sanitation, and Improvement of the Family
Economy, and Community Organization. In Guatemala the conditions of extreme poverty require
many families to encounter their livelihood by collecting garbage. This is the case with the families
called “Guajeros”. By transmitting this means of livelihood to their children the parents of these
families put the future of their childrens´ nutrition, health, and education at risk. These parents
are aware of the risk of contamination they are putting their children at but they have no other
recourse. For these children nutrition, basic health, and basic education are far out of reach.
Taking into account that malnutrition is caused by an inadequate or imbalanced diet, and
problems with digestion or absorption, among other causes, the Coordinator of ONG de Alta
Verapaz with the initials “CONGAV” in cooperation with the Associación Maya para el Desarrollo
Integral Comunitario (ASOMADIC; Mayan Association for the Basic Developement of Comminities)
and the Alianza Nacional Comunitaria (ANC; National Community Alliance) will implement a
program for the promotion of the Nutrition of the Mayan Q´eqchi´ y Poqomchi´ communities of
Altverapaz, Guatemala, Central America.
IV. Description of activities
The program has four components. The first is to reduce the consequences of infectious illnesses
through improved nutrition of the individual beneficiary families and communities which can
apply sensible methods from traditional medicine that have been shown to be extremely effective
against the main infectious illnesses that cause infant mortality and malnutrition.
The second component works to address the impact of malnutrition directly, inasmuch as the
available resources provide. The lack of nutrition like poor quality nutrition is the second cause of
malnutrition (after infectious diseases) in Guatemala. With this in mind we hope to influence the
different situations that will permit families to improve their food supply in quality and quantity.
The production of organic food will permit families farm without contact with chemicals which
themselves often provoke nutritional deficiencies. The best food production allows families to
provide their own fresh food at a local level. The best scenario is the promotion of a healthy diet
realized through education and community regulations which allows for customary rights whereby
the peoples may decide what they eat and what products they use in the community with the
understanding that traditional diet is of better quality than the junk food and industrialized food
products. Through community law enforcement the framework will be provided to improve
education and healhty diet. There exist technologies which are environmentally sustainable.
The majority of technologies that are being used now by large businesses are contaminating
the environment. Environmentally friendly technologies may be employed such as: organic
fertilizers which allow for the reuse of available resources, irrigation techniques, land preparation
(terrazas) and other practices which can actually improve the yield of harvests, improving the
health of indigenous peoples in two ways: removing harmful chemicals from their environment
and providing an abundance of food.
The third component Works as an underpinning for the aforementioned components: the
involvement of the local authorities, and nations in the resolution of problems. This includes
the management and increased allotment for budgets, improved public policy regarding health,
nutrition and food supply, especial regarding the treatment of infectious diseases which are the
principal cause of malnutrition in tropical countries like Guatemala.
Component 4: ( Basic –biospsychosocial-cognitive care) This ncludes the implementation of
scholarships for children of families in extreme conditions of poverty and malnutrition to reduce
the risk of health as well as create opportunities to change their way of life.

Source text - Spanish The Ames test aims to identify whether certain substances that are mutagenic are also carcinogenic. The bacteria Salmonella typhimurium carries a defective gene rendering it unable to synthesize histidine from the culture medium. If the bacteria mutates it may regain this ability to synthesize histidine and grow on a medium which lacks histidine. This is called a back mutation.
In this article the photograph shows an example of a positive Ames test. A strain of Salmonella which requires histidine was placed in the agar without histidine along with a disc with a certain quantity of 2 aminoflourene, a known carcinogen. The mutagenic effect of the Chemicals produced this type of back mutation.
There are substances that cause mutations or cancer only when they have been metabolized by the body, for this reason liver enzymes are included in the agar.
Along with substances from the Chemicals industry, there are many natural substances which are harmful and mutagenic like aflatoxin which is found in peanuts in around 2 parts per billion.
Now, the Ames test is being adapted to more suitably fit the conditions found in the human body, forfeiting the use of salmonella bacteria for yeast and mammalian cells grown in culture. With recombinant DNA technology the door has opened for the use of whole animals in long term Studies along in combination with the Ames test.
Translation - English El ensayo Ames se dirige a identificar si ciertas sustancias mutagénicos también tienen capacidades mutagénicos. La bacteria Salmonella typhimurium lleva un gen defectivo que la rinde incapaz de sintetizar la histidina del medio nutritivo sin histidina. Este proceso se denomina retromutación.
En este articulo la foto muestra un ensayo Ames la cual es positivo. Una cepa de Salmonella la cuál requiere histidina se puso en el agar sin histidina y se puso un disco con una cierta cantidad de 2-amino fluoreno, un carcinogénico conocido. El efecto mutagénico de la química provocó esta tipo de retro mutación.
Hay sustancias que causan mutaciones o cáncer solamente si las ha metabolizado el cuerpo, por cual razón unas enzimas del hígado se incluyo en el agar.
Aparte de las sustancias de la industria química, hay bastantes sustancias naturales las cuáles son perjudicadoras y mutagénicos como la aflatoxina que se encuentra en los cacahuates en alrededor de 2 partes por billón.
Ahora, se adapta el ensayo Ames para que quepa las condiciones que se encuentra en el cuerpo humano con el uso de las levaduras y las células mamíferas culturadas en cambio por la Salmonella. Con el desarrollo de la tecnología recombinante de ADN, se abra las oportunidades por el buen uso de animales enteros en estudios de largo plazo en combinación con ciertas técnicas del ensayo Ames.

I am very interested in doing translation work. I was asked to do interpreting for a Spanish/English bible study I attended in the united states. Since this experience I have interpreted many times in my travels to Guatemala. I believe I have a good knowledge of the cultures of Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. My knowledge of Honduras comes from my experience there increasing my Spanish language skills at an intensive one on one language school called Guacamaya in Copan ruinas Honduras.
I have increased my knowledge of the various cultures of Guatemala through my studies of the Q'eqchi' language. Although I don't yet have an expertise in translating Q'eqchi, I hope to have one sometime soon. Studying the largest indigenous language group in Guatemala provided me with invaluable insight into the culture of Central America that is richly influenced by the Mayan traditions. My knowledge of Mexican culture comes from my time making friendships with migrant workers in my community.
During my last trip to Guatemala, I developed a friendship with a leader from the organization ASOMADIC which works to provide aid to indigenous Mayans who struggle with malnutrition among other things. I was afforded the opportunity to translate a document for this organization which can be seen here on the website.
Right now, I am attending pharmacy school in Guatemala City. I should be well prepared to translate any technical documents in this field; from Spanish to English or vice verse. Thank You! I look forward to working with you!
