Source text - Spanish Este libro es a la vez una reflexión que nos permite pensar el patrimonio de modo diferente, un conjunto de historias sobre una comarca y sus gentes, y el reflejo de mi trayectoria personal como investigador.
En él exploro un territorio donde las iniciativas patrimoniales oficiales y las instituciones públicas han tenido escasa incidencia.
Pero las ausencias pueden ser tan perniciosas como la presencia dominante de las instituciones para la desarticulación de territorios y sociedades.
En Maragatería, los procesos de patrimonialización son escasamente previsibles y evolucionan de acuerdo a parámetros alejados de lo que habitualmente se conoce como el ‘discurso patrimonial autorizado’ (Smith 2006).
Elementos que podrían ser considerados patrimonio según las jerarquías globales de valor son destruidos, yacen abandonados, o simplemente, ‘están ahí’; mientras otros han sido exageradamente construidos como patrimonio, en particular la propia identidad y tradición maragata.
Debido a los rápidos cambios recientes en la economía española y la desestructuración socioeconómica del país, conviven en Maragatería sujetos y grupos sociales diferentes, tanto en lo que se refiere a sus valores, percepciones espacio-temporales y formas de relación, como en lo que el patrimonio puede significar en sus modos de existencia.
En Maragatería, los actores sociales no opinan cosas distintas u opuestas sobre el patrimonio, sino que viven en entramados de significado, trayectorias vitales y cosmovisiones parcialmente divergentes.
El libro cartografía la Maragatería, mapeando las dinámicas de cambio en los patrones de relación entre las personas, y entre las personas y las cosas, a través del marco de referencia del patrimonio.
No se trata de ‘aprender sobre patrimonio’ o definirlo como si de una esencia se tratase, sino aprender de los actores y entender así cómo devienen junto con el patrimonio y el entramado de relaciones en el que viven.
Este aprendizaje sobre las relaciones tiene como objetivo último situar el patrimonio en el marco de la forma de relacionalidad dominante a día de hoy, el capitalismo.
Dentro de este marco, también se examinará cómo el patrimonio contribuye a la reproducción del capitalismo, y cómo, en el proceso, se reorganizan las trayectorias vitales, capacidades de actuación y poderes de los distintos actores en el territorio, con sus tendencias contradictorias hacia la auto-organización igualitaria y la inmanencia, o hacia la jerarquización y transcendencia de las relaciones sociales a través del establecimiento de relaciones de poder específicas.
Translation - English This book is at once a reflection that allows us to think differently about heritage, a set of stories about a region and its peoples, and the reflection of my personal career as a researcher.
In it I explore a territory where official heritage initiatives and public institutions have had little impact.
But absences can be as pernicious as the dominant presence of institutions for the disarticulation of territories and societies.
In Maragatería, heritagization processes are hardly predictable and evolve according to parameters far removed from what is commonly known as the "authorized heritage discourse" (Smith 2006).
Elements that could be considered heritage based on global hierarchies of value are destroyed, lying in abandon, or simply "there", while others have been exaggeratedly constructed as heritage, particularly Maragato identity and tradition.
Due to recent rapid changes in the Spanish economy and the socio-economic de-structuring of the country, different subjects and social groups cohabitate in Maragatería, in terms of their values, space-time perceptions and forms of relating, as well as what heritage can mean in their modes of existence.
In Maragatería, social actors do not have differing or opposing views on heritage; rather they inhabit partially divergent frameworks of meaning, vital trajectories and worldviews.
This book charts Maragatería, mapping the dynamics of change in the patterns of relations between people, and between people and things, through the framework of heritage.
This is not "learning about heritage" or defining it as if it were an essence, but rather learning from the actors and understanding how they came to be along with their heritage and the network of relationships in which they live.
The goal in learning about these relationships is to place heritage in the framework of the current dominant form of relationality: capitalism.
Within this framework, I also examine how heritage contributes to the reproduction of capitalism, and how, in the process, the vital trajectories, capacities for action, and powers of various actors in the territory are reorganized, rearranging their contradictory tendencies toward egalitarian self-organization and immanence, or toward the creation of hierarchies and transcendence of social relations by establishing specific power relations.
