Source text - Italian VALUTAZIONE DEL RISCHIO SANITARIO DALL'ESPOSIZIONE A SUOLI CONTAMINATI DA BERILLIO NELL'AREA DI CERANO (BRINDISI)

Translation - English HEALTH RISK FROM EXPOSURE TO BERYLLIUM CONTAMINATED SOIL
A study was undertaken which measured the soil surrounding the Thermo-electric plant at Cerano. Out of 688 samples, 242 were found to be contaminated with heavy metals. Of most concern was the presence of beryllium at levels above the recommended risk concentration values. According to The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), beryllium is considered a Group 1 substance, and it is highly carcinogenic to both humans and animals. Dr. Chirilli, who conducted the survey, commented that “the results back up the restrictive measures enforced by the Mayor of Brindisi, who issued an injunction suspending all agricultural cultivation in the investigated area”.
