enfrentamos quienes por décadas
hemos investigado, apreciado
e incluso coleccionado
la indumentaria tradicional de
México es la acelerada pérdida
de su uso entre un creciente número de
etnias y comunidades. Este proceso no es
nuevo, existen diversos testimonios en este
libro rescatados por su autor de las formas en
que la discriminación y el racismo en contra
de la población indígena, motivada por una
obsesión por la “modernidad”, han contribuido
a su abandono. ¿Qué podemos decir
ante un alcalde de Tantoyuca de los 1930s
que prohibió a los teneek entrar a la ciudad
vestidos con su traje tradicional? Ante el
acoso y “presión de sus pares” ¿qué joven va
a continuar diferenciándose a través de su
vestimenta? Visto por la mayor parte de la
población como “típico” o “folklórico”, ridiculizado
en programas de televisión, denostado
en el sistema educativo nacional, nuestro
país en pleno siglo XXI no logra conciliar
y aceptar plenamente su riqueza y diversidad
cultural.
Translation - English One of the greatest challenges faced by
those who, for decades, have appreciated,
collected and done research on traditional
clothing in Mexico is its increasingly fast
lack of use among a growing number of
ethnicities and communities. This is not a
new process. In this book, the author recovers
several testimonies on how discrimination
and racism against the indigenous
population, motivated by an obsession with
“modernity”, have contributed to the abandonment
of traditional clothing. What could
we say, knowing that in Tantoyuca, in the 1930’s, a major forbade
the Teneeks to enter the city dressed in their traditional clothes?
Before the harassment and the “pressure from their peers”, what
young person would continue to distinguish from others through
their clothing? Perceived by most of the population as “typical” or
“folkloric”, ridiculed in television programs, vilified in the national
education system, our country, already in the 21st Century, is unable
to reconcile and fully accept its richness and cultural diversity.
