The European Commission established the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in 1989 to encourage cooperation and exchanges between young scientists, and to allow them to get guidance from some of the most distinguished researchers in Europe. The first competition was held in Brussels and since then in 23 different European cities.
The aim of the competition is to support the efforts being made in the participating countries to attract young people to study in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and to choose a career related to science and research. Since 1989, the number of young scientists participating has increased year after year: 59 participated in the first competition, 126 took part in 2013, a climax was reached in Paris in 2009 when 137 competitors took part.
The number of women participating in the contest indicates the general problem that so few women are involved in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This year, fewer than 35 % of the contestants were female (44 women compared to 82 men). In 1997 the number of female competitors exceeded the 30% threshold for the first time, and since then it has remained between 30% and 35% for the most part; in 2005 there was a peak of 41%. In the past 25 years, the award has been won by 168 girls and 576 boys.

Bhunaigh an Coimisiún Eorpach Comórtas an Aontais Eorpaigh d'Eolaithe Óga sa bhliain 1989 chun comhar agus malartú taithí a spreagadh idir eolaithe óga, agus deis a thabhairt dóibh treoir a fháil ó roinnt de na taighdeoirí is iomráití san Eoraip. Reáchtáladh an chéad chomórtas sa Bhruiséil agus ó shin i leith reáchtáladh i 23 cathair éagsúla san Eoraip é.
Is é aidhm an chomórtais ná tacú leis na hiarrachtaí atá á ndéanamh sna tíortha rannpháirteacha chun daoine óga a mhealladh le staidéar a dhéanamh i réimsí na heolaíochta, na teicneolaíochta, na hinnealtóireachta agus na matamaitice; agus le gairm a roghnú a bhaineann le heolaíocht agus le taighde. Ó 1989 i leith, tá líon na n-iomaitheoirí óga a ghlacann páirt ann méadaithe bliain i ndiaidh bliana: 59 a bhí páirteach sa chéad chomórtas, 126 a ghlac páirt ann in 2013, agus bhí an líon is mó in 2009 i bPáras, b’shin 137 n-iomaitheoir.
Léiríonn líon na mban a bhíonn páirteach sa chomórtas an fhadhb nach mbíonn an oiread sin ban ag obair i réimsí na heolaíochta, na teicneolaíochta, na hinnealtóireachta agus na matamaitice. I mbliana, ní raibh ach 35% dena n-iomaitheoirí ina n-iomaitheoirí ban (44 bhean i gcomparáid le 82 fhear). Ba in 1997 a sháraigh líon na n iomaitheoirí ban an tairseach 30% den chéad uair, agus ó shin i leith tá sé idir 30% agus 35% den chuid is mó; sáraíodh sin i 2005 nuair a bhí 41% ann. Le 25 bliain anuas, tá duais bainte ag 168 gcailín agus 576 bhuachaill.

Experience
Years of experience: 19. Registered at ProZ.com: Dec 2017. Became a member: Jan 2019.
I live bilingually, able to communicate with equal facility in English and Irish. My formal education in languages is an honours degree in French & Italian (with subsidiary German & Irish) from the National University of Ireland, Galway. I completed the Gaelchultúr Intensive Course in Irish Translation in December 2016 and achieved 94% in the final exam. I have an NCVA Certificate - Level 2 in Information Technology from the Galway Technical Institute, and a Certificate in Practical Journalistic Writing Skills from the Irish Academy of Public Relations. I completed and passed with distinction all ECDL modules (IT).
Having travelled and worked extensively throughout Europe, I also enjoy a good working knowledge of Spanish, German & Greek. My professional experience to date has been varied, including language teaching in Milan and a two-year period as manager of a busy restaurant on the Greek Island of Crete. Since 2004 I have worked as a Multilingual Customer Service Advisor at Galway City Council. As part of my job I translate correspondence submitted in Irish, French and Italian.
I worked for two years (2002-2004) as Public Relations Officer with Conradh na Gaeilge, 45 Dominick Street, Galway. I was required to write and submit press releases and articles to local and national newspapers, radio stations and TV channels through the medium of Irish. I also translated documents from English to Irish and vice versa for customers and local businesses who wished to conduct their business bilingually.
For the past fourteen years, translation has been a significant component of my working life. My highest level of confidence is with translation between French, Italian, English and Irish. I work mainly on EU texts.
