Au cours des deux dernières décennies, la parité hommes-femmes est devenue un concept bien connu de la plupart des décideurs politiques. La parité hommes-femmes est un processus d'évaluation qui impliquent les femmes et les hommes de toute action planifiée, y compris la législation, des politiques ou des programmes, dans tout domaine et à tous les niveaux. C'est une stratégie pour faire des préoccupations et des expériences des femmes et des hommes une dimension intégrale dans la conception, dans la mise en œuvre, dans le suivi et évaluation des politiques et de programmes dans tous les sphères politiques, économiques et sociales, afin que l'inégalité entre les hommes et les femmes ne soit pas pérennisée.
Dans de nombreuses régions du monde, les normes rigides fondées sur le genre et les perceptions préjudiciables de ce qu’est un homme ou une femme, encouragent des hommes à s'engager dans des comportements à haut risque à savoir le recours à la violences faites aux femmes, libre accès aux hommes de pouvoir d’initier et d’imposer les conditions en terme de sexualité privant ainsi les femmes de se protéger contre le VIH et de la violence et aussi des droits de consultation des services de santé reproductive et sexuelle (SRHR).
De la même manière, une dynamique inégale du genre et de pouvoir entre les couples peut avoir une incidence négative sur la tâche parentale. Ainsi, les pères qui élèvent leurs enfants en prenant conscience des valeurs d'égalité des sexes et de justice contribuent à éviter que des normes préjudiciables à l'égalité des sexes ne se développent à l'avenir. En d'autres termes, ils contribuent directement à mettre fin à la violence et au bien-être physique et psychologique et, par conséquent, à réduire les taux de mortalité masculine et féminine de leurs sociétés respectives.

Over the last two decades, gender mainstreaming has become a familiar concept to many policy makers. Gender mainstreaming is the process of assessing the implications for women and men of any planned action, including legislation, policies or programmes, in any area and at all levels. It is a strategy for making women and men's concerns and experiences an integral dimension in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes in all political, economic and social spheres, such that inequality between men and women is not perpetuated.
Across much of the world, rigid gender norms and harmful perceptions of what it means to be a man or a woman encourage men to engage in high risk behaviours, condone violence against women, grant men the power to initiate and dictate the terms of sex, and make it difficult for women to protect themselves from either HIV or violence as well as to seek sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) and services. In a similar way, unequal dynamics of gender and power between couples can reflect negatively in the task of parenting. In this way, fathers who raising children with awareness towards values of gender equality and justice are helping to avoid the development of harmful gender norms in the future. In other words, they are directly contributing to ending violence, physical and psychological well-being, and therefore, lowering male and female mortality rates of their respective societies.
