Dari to English: Extracts from interviews with refugee women from Afghanistan General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Asylum/Migration/Displacement
Translation - English “What I mean is, I take pride in you, because I think that Afghanistan has the greatest people, who can make their mark anywhere. No matter where they are, they can achieve great things. Whenever I see one of us who has achieved something great, I feel that I too have achieved it. That I too am capable of great things. That I am never without hope, or feel that I should be hopeless.”
Persian (Farsi) to English: Extracts from interviews with refugee women from Afghanistan General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Asylum/Migration/Displacement
Translation - English “Life had its difficulties in the beginning. As a migrant, starting a new life, in a new environment, in a new society, when you arrive, naturally, there are challenges, especially that you don’t know the language. My husband speaks English, but we understand that they don’t speak it much here, only their own language. Thus, ever so slowly, our lives went on. My husband did some study. I was with the children, because the caring responsibilities for children are greater here. You have to be attentive to your children, and do so properly and correctly, because if you want to raise healthy and well-behaved children in society, you must pay close attention to them. And especially in Germany, you cannot raise a child properly if you aren’t devoted and willing to make sacrifices. Growing up is not the only important thing for a child. Besides raising them, education and upbringing are also important. You must provide them with a proper education and upbringing, so that they will have a strong foundation. If we do this correctly, our lives will be easier in the future knowing that they have this strong foundation.”
