Source text - Italian Reframing Assumptions About Work and Learning
Same old language, same old assumptions. We clearly need new language – imagery that
captures the emerging reality of work and reframes the assumptions about learning. The
reinvention of the workplace a century ago – the assembly line – viewed the worker as little
more than an extension of the machine.4 Simple learning (Instruction) was the order of the
day. To enshrine stability, hierarchy and control, the constant theme was: (1) “Keep it
simple;” (2) “There is only one way to do it;” and (3) “Don’t colour outside the lines.” See
Figure one.
Paradoxically, the introduction of the internet meant, for many, that the more things changed
the more they stayed the same. A veritable army of clerical workers were now an extension
of the “electronic machine.” Command and control were wrapped in the aura of speed
and efficiency, but do as you are told was still the order of the day. Simple learning and
instruction ruled. A leadership mindset dominated by do, don’t think and read the manual.
And, of course, having a career was a great option.
And then things changed – slowly at first and then in dramatic leaps. Software introduced the
opportunity for us to engage our unsurpassed capacity to learn. PowerPoint became “power
to.” Next came computer games. At first competing against ourselves and then, literally,
against anyone who was up for the challenge. Film making, video editing, breakthroughs in
graphic design, voice recognition, augmented reality and a whole lot more followed. Even
marketing is becoming immersive, interactional and virtual. Welcome to learning how to
learn (Exploration).
How Ya Gonna Keep ‘em Down on the Farm (After They’ve Seen Paree)? was a World War I
song that became popular in the immediate post-war years. How ya gonna keep ‘em battened
down in their cubicle, being told what to do, when learning how to learn has entered their
consciousness? Why has retention become such a problematic issue? Why are, literally, the
majority of today’s workforce disillusioned, disappointed and disconnected from what is
important in their lives? Ineffective leadership, lack of meaning and/or purpose5 and little
sense of belonging are part of it. Diversity, inclusion, flexibility and the environment have
become the heart of it. But awaking a generation to the joy of learning was the start of it.

Stesso linguaggio, stesse supposizioni. Abbiamo chiaramente bisogno di un nuovo linguaggio, ovvero di immagini che catturano la realtà emergente del lavoro e riformulano i presupposti sull’apprendimento. La reinvenzione del luogo del lavoro di un secolo fa, cioè la catena di montaggio, che considerava il lavoratore come elemento insignificante. L’apprendimento semplice (istruzione) era l’ordine del giorno. Per sancire stabilità, gerarchia e controllo, il tema costante era: 1. Semplicità, 2. Un solo metodo, 3. Di non colorare fuori dalle righe.
Paradossalmente, l’introduzione dell’Internet ha significato che per molti, più le cose cambiavano, e più restavano uguali. Un vero e proprio esercito di impiegati erano ormai un’estensione della ‘macchina elettronica’. Comando e controllo erano avvolti nell’aura della velocità ed efficienza, ma seguire le istruzzione era ancora l’ordine del giorno. Apprendimento semplice, e l’istruzione comandava. Una mentalità di leadership dominata dal ‘fai, non pensare’ e leggi il manuale. E naturalemente, fare carriera era un’ottima opzione.
E poi, le cose sono cambiate, dapprima lentamente e poi a passi da gigante. Il software ha introdotto l’opportunità per noi di sfruttare la nostra insuperabile capacità di apprendimento. PowerPoint è diventato un potere. Poi sono arrivati i giochi per i computer. Dapprima in competizione con noi stessi, e poi letteralmente contro chiunque fosse pronto alla sfida. Realizzazione di film, montaggio video, scoperte in design grafico, riconoscimento vocale e molto altro ancora. Anche il marketing sta diventando immersivo, interattivo e virtuale. Benvenuti a imparare come imparare.

Come farai a tenerli battuti nel loro cubicolo, quando gli viene detto cosa fare, quando imparare a imparare é entrato nella nosta coscienza? Perchè la ritenzione é diventata una questione cosí problematica? Perchà la maggior parte della forza lavorativa di oggi è disillusa, delusa e disconnessa da ciò che è importante nella loro vita? Leadership inefficace, mancanza di significato e/o scopo e poco senso di appartenenza ne fanno parte. Diversità, inclusione, flessibilità e ambiente sono diventate le parti più importanti. Ma risvegliare la nuova generazione alla gioia del’apprendimento ne è stato l’inizio.
