Summary
The "Campus Carlos III" Strategic Plan, coordinated by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, was one of five projects selected as a Campus of International Excellence in the first Spanish edition, CEI-2009. All of the actions presented in this report form part of the strategies set out in the Strategic Plan of “Campus Carlos III 2009” and therefore are closely linked to its main objectives.
The first objective of “Campus Carlos III” is to strengthen our Graduate programs. Key to accomplishing this is to build and equip a new Graduate Center. This project appears as action 2.i of this report and is listed in priority funding area number II of the Subprogram for Strengthening: Creation of Doctoral Schools and International and Interuniversity Graduate Schools.
Attracting research talent is essential in order to increase the University’s overall research capacity. The “Campus Carlos III” Project contains the Chairs of Excellence program which was developed with the support of Banco Santander and is specifically aimed at recruiting top professors. This program appears as action 2.ii of this report and is listed in priority funding area number III: Policies and actions directed at recruiting talent, as well as further fomenting that recruitment through internal stimulus policies.
Another aim of “Campus Carlos III” is to increase on-campus housing, doubling the current capacity of the Getafe campus. To this end a new Student Residence Hall must be built. This project is presented as action 2.iii of this report and is listed in priority funding area number IV: Building and renovating university housing.
Internationalization comprises one of the strategic dimensions of “Campus Carlos III” because UC3M operates within a global context. Prior activities have already been carried out with Universities of Excellence in France, as set out in action 2.iv of this report, which is listed in priority funding area number V: Preparatory actions for cross-border campus.
A further objective of the “Campus Carlos III” is the culmination of the adaptation to the European Higher Education Area. The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid was a pioneer in Spain in adapting all of its programs to the EHEA, and has designed a plan to modify infrastructures to adapt them to the EHEA. This plan is presented as action 2.v., which is listed in priority funding area number VI: Adaptation to the European Higher Education Area.
Finally, an action directed at the development of an Integral Accessibility Plan is presented. The aim of this plan is to make “Campus Carlos III” a campus of universal accessibility, free of barriers of any type.
The funding of all these actions will permit UC3M to continue to develop the “Campus Carlos III” Strategic Plan within the International Campus of Excellence Program.
I have been living and working as a teacher and translator in Spain since 1989. Most of my work has been in connection with the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (www.uc3m.es).
I spent two years as the University President's Chief of Staff in order to help with the launching of some of the University's international activities (Campus of International Excellence, Webpage in English, etc).
Prior to that, my work included collaborating with the University and individual faculty members on a variety of translation projects, including the translation of three textbooks on Statistics, through a company that I co-founded. The company has offered English language courses and language services to the University since 1993.
After 20 years at the University I decided to turn to freelance translating.
My personal interests include horse-back riding and hiking with my dogs in the mountains near my home.
