Heart Month Powwow Toronto Report - February 28, 2010
This Powwow was called a Heart Month Powwow for two reasons. Firstly, February is Valentine’s Day month, but secondly, and more importantly, this Powwow is a tribute to all the translators and interpreters who gave from their hearts and donated much expertise to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort since the January 12, 2010 quake. In particular, we tip our hats to our own Toronto translator and interpreter Nicholas Ferreira, who has created an incredible project, linking translators and interpreters with on-going critical need language projects in Haiti. Nicholas, thank you. Suzanne Deliscar related that her husband survived the earthquake and how much people like Nicholas made a difference.
We also discussed tips to help new translators become established, including:
- registering on multiple translation job portals
- sending out cover letters and resumes by hard copy to agencies
- becoming involved in social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Xing
- keeping in contact with agencies on a regular basis
We also talked about how to be unique as a translator, rates, word count output per day, and using CAT tools.
Our attendance was lower than usual due to the fact it was the Olympic gold medal hockey final between Canada and the United States, and many people stayed home to cheer Canada to victory. We have agreed to go back to meeting on Thursdays at any rate, as it seems that Thursdays work better than Sunday afternoons or evenings. We will meet again in May.
