My go May 13, 2011

1. Visualizing one's achievements can effectively contribute towards reaching one's objectives.

2. Early memories of childhood came back to her haunting her with vividness.

3. I must say I wish the circumstances were less difficult.

(Sorry, made a mistake. I hope I did not correct it after somebody else's correct answers!)

You nailed it, Tomás! May 13, 2011

Hi Tomás,

Well done! Now sentence 2 can be ordered in other two different ways (apart from yours) and still be grammatically correct. Anyone else willing to give it a try?

I think this is more likely

Memories of her early childhood came back to haunting her with vividness.

"to haunting" May 13, 2011

This doesn't sound right to me, this gerund doesn't quite collocate with "to".

My paraphrase of Tomas' sentence is:

Early memories of her childhood came back to her with haunting vividness.

Indeed. And it sounds far more terrible than my wording of it. Poor woman!

Yes, it gives a different connotation, surely. We don't have any insight into the preceding context, so it's pretty much free style rewriting. But it ultimately depends on what effect a writer wants to evoke in the reader.

Also, taking a look at the phrase:

Early memories of her childhood

There are variations to it:

Her early childhood memories ( what does early refer to, childhood or memories?):

Memories of her early childhood

or

Early memories of her childhood

?

That's right! And there are at least two more possibilities May 14, 2011

Hi Lingua 5B,

Good one! There are at least two more possibilities:

Memories of her early childhood came back to her with haunting vividness.

Update: I see you got this one, too, Lingua 5B

and

Haunting memories of her early childhood came back to her with vividness.

To tell you the truth I was not expecting so many possible solutions.

Good job!

There are a lot of possibilities May 14, 2011

Words can be arranged however we want them. Some of the versions below are a bit unlikely, pragmatically, but they're all possible, and there are definitely more.
