Translation vs summary: no need to feel guilty if you end up being asked for translation Nov 23, 2012

Without further instructions, I would advise you to translate as others have said. I would just add that:

- there is such a service as a "summary translation", that you could offer to provide, or which the client is at liberty to request, if deemed appropriate by one or other party: but whichever you provide, a key point is that it should be understood by both parties that that is what you are "signing your name to", and that in the case of a summary translation, the client/user of ... - there is such a service as a "summary translation", that you could offer to provide, or which the client is at liberty to request, if deemed appropriate by one or other party: but whichever you provide, a key point is that it should be understood by both parties that that is what you are "signing your name to", and that in the case of a summary translation, the client/user of the translation understands the additional risks associated with being provided with lesser information;
- whilst unfit for many other purposes, machine translation systems between mainstream languages have now reached the level where they can generally be used to "see what a paragraph of text is basically talking about": in other words, if a client wants to trade off wasting their time against less money spent on translating unnecessary parts of the text, a visit to Google Translate will often give them the means to establish which are the parts of a text worth having translated and which parts are simply telling you how to navigate your way to the client's office via the number 76 tram.
