Arabic term

سرعان ما انهار

Arabic to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation world cup
i know what the terms mean but can't make sense of this sentence (referring to the world cup game between tunisia and spain):

وبعد أن صمدوا لمدة 72 دقيقة سرعان ما انهار زملاء جوهر المناري صاحب الهدف اليتيم للفريق التونسي

Discussion

Sam Berner Jun 20, 2006:
Sorry, I didn't watch the game. Did they fall onto the grass in exhaustion, or did their defense fail? These are two very different terms in English, and my respected colleagues here have provided the meaning for the first option.

I think the key word here is سرعان
هل معنى سرعان هنا أنهم سقطوا بسرعة خلال وقت قصير بعد بداية المباراة...أم المقصود أنهم سقطوا فجأة أو دون توقع أن يحدث ذلك بعد أن صمدوا لفترة طويلة هي 72 دقيقة من عمر المباراة...هذا متروك لرأي الزملاء.
Peer comment(s):

agree Mahammad Kalfat (X) : totally agree. سرعان here is used improperly, the writer means "suddenly" or "all at once". that's why Dana didn't make sense of it, i think.

it was not long until . .they fell down

Very Simply " They fell down very soon"
Peer comment(s):

neutral ahmadwadan.com : 72 min out of 90 is supposed to be long period, but after this long period they fell down. But I like your phrase structure very much.

soon broke down

I am assuming we are talking about their defence.
"The colleagues of Morocco's single goal maker, Gohar Al-Manari, broke down soon after the 72 minutes of holding it out."
Peer comment(s):
