French term

dictées muettes

French to English Social Sciences Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs
this CP report card mentions for the 1st period "il comprend ce qu'il lit et avance bien en dictées muettes". That "silent dictation" really throws me. Any help appreciated.

Martin, no it is not. Some other private French school.
Martin Cassell Jul 30, 2008:
Is it a Montessori school ?

a possibility.

"Après la découverte sensorielle et phonétique des lettres, les dictées muettes demandent à composer avec des lettres mobiles des mots correspondant à des images."

agree Emma Paulay : Yes, I like this. It's a lot less pompous than 'dictation'!//True, it may not be exactly the same as at Montessori.

thanks Emma but I still wouldn't like to say categorically this is what is meant by "dictée muette" at the school in question
agree Lucy Hill : oh, this question is already closed!! I'm highly confused :) sorry!

no need to 'pologise, I'm sure!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I used "picture spelling/silent dictation" in combination but unfortunately can award Kudoz only once, and the picture spelling explains the issue better, I feel. Thanks go to all of you who have been of tremendous help!"

phonetic dictation

Used in Montessori schools, with a 'moveable alphabet'. They don't actually name it as 'phonetic dictation', but that's how I'd describe it.

silent dictation

Looks like it is just that.

You also have the ability to upload the file you have recorded in to dragon for silent dictation in to your word processing application, but I have found this quite unreliable in noisy environments without purchasing a separate microphone which, for a good model can cost upwards of £50. Dragon is also very sensative and not very tolarent of background noise, so a good headset is advised.

I would just like to say that the 1st of the above quotes is not my spelling!

neutral Martin Cassell : Helen, I don't think this (your Dragon example) is the context

Ok, hopefully it will be clarified.

silent picture-sound association

Yet another technique, it seems. Not positive on English name.

" -dictée muette : à partir d’images, l’élève doit colorier d’une certaine couleur l’image où il entend tel son (c’est lui qui lit les mots dans sa tête)."

a French school practice of memorising a text and writing it out in controlled conditions

This is what we did regularly at school in France... It is to give you a head start with the spelling and grammar of a text and improve your memory.

so for your sentence... "He understands what he reads and is showing great improvement in exercises involving learning by heart and writing from memory"

OK, I remember now, we called it autodictée at a later age... probably best to ask for more details on this one if at all possible because different teachers probably have different names for their methods... If it is what I have suggested, then in CP it would clearly be would clearly not be "texts"!!
