In such a case (probably a PLC) a so-called digital input is generally a single logic input (yes/no or true/false function) which is connected to a device sendig for example a ready/not ready condition. This is why it is necessary to have separate wires : all these inputs are comming from different devices.

Comment: "Thanks everyone for your help. I finally found this on a Siemens web page for the I/O modules in question. The description says basically the same thing as why-gee's answer: Siemens terminology is "single cores attached to the operator panel front with screw contacts and cut off neatly at the other end"
