Control

English to French Other Education / Pedagogy
CONTROL
A constant or control is something that does not change throughout the experiment. Controls are used to make sure your comparisons are meaningful. If you do not have controls, you may not be able to tell why you got the results that you did. Therefore, a controlled experiment is an experiment in which all conditions except one are held constant.

Often an experiment may have two or more different setups. An experimental setup is one part or one arrangement of materials in the overall experimental design. If nothing is changed in one of those setups, it is called the control. The control helps you to know what happens when you don’t make any changes (when the setup is left alone). In the other setups, the independent variable is changed. After your experiment, you can compare the data from the different setups.

I found "Témoin", is there an other word in this context ? Thank you

agree Susana E. Cano Méndez : "témoin": "Essai contrôlé": il s'agit d'un essai clinique comparatif comprenant un groupe témoin (ou en anglais : control group) et un groupe traité."//Mais il s'agit de la même méthode scientifique.

disagree Daryo : that a description of why you need a "control", not a translation for "control"
