SPAIN. Am considering "rhizoliths" (root systems that have become encased in minerals) for this. Have asked the authors, who weren't sure and will get back to me. Seeking confirmation and/or enlightenment.
"Observando en detalle las arcillas rojas de la deposición en las llanuras de inundación de los abanicos, se pueden reconocer unas estructuras irregulares verticales que no son otra cosa que las marcas de antiguas raíces de plantas que crecían en estos antiguos suelos (rizotúbulos o rizoconcrecciones)."

Seems they are a type of rhizolith. See these links, for example:
"The second type of rhizolith, called rhizotubules, consists of alteration haloes surrounded by localized carbonate nodules that are stacked parallel to the vertical..."
http://tinyurl.com/pbrgfcc
"Rhizoliths in the formation include root casts, rhizotubules, and rhizoconcretions. They are associated with reduced zones and burrows in a complex pattern in all sandstone facies."

Note from asker:
I googled "rhizotubule" yesterday and got nothing. Today it's a different story. How odd. |
