Tengo que traducir una serie de cartas de recomendación y constancias de trabajo de un grupo familiar y una de las personas trabajó como docente contratada (profesor contratado) en un instituto universitario y como profesor a tiempo convencional en otra universidad. No tengo ni idea de cómo se traducen los términos, pero al menos en una referencia encontré que podrían ser sinónimos.
"Por medio de la presente, me permito recomendar ampliamente a xxx, quien laboró para esta casa de estudios desde xxx hasta xxx, adscrita al Departamento de Matemáticas y Física, ocupando el cargo de **docente contratada** y dictando la asignatura de Estadística Aplicada a la Educación."

Since 'docente' is a rather general term and may not imply (or be associated with) any rank within the college or university, I would go with 'instructor' or 'faculty member' here.

Come to think of it, even 'instructor' can be a rank below assistant professor at certain colleges (in the US), so 'faculty' or 'faculty member' would be the best options for 'docente' in my opinion---again, as these are more generic terms and, as such, are generally not associated with any ranks in the context of promotion and tenure.

Not in the US. My official rank for 5 years was "instructor". Also, "adjunct professor" is a formal rank used at many US universities.

: And the target audience? It won't include N.Am speakers?> Though 'contract' may be a literal option, 'lecturer' is a specific rank: in the US, it's below asst prof. 'Docente' is more generic, so faculty member is probably the closest equivalent here.
