Non-PRO (1): Karen Vincent-Jones (X)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Actually for once I don't think we need more context. It's a self-contained, self-explanatory sentence. But yes, most questions require more context than this.
James A. Walsh Jan 18, 2016:
@asker You need to provide full sentences from the original source text, not just snippets. We don't have the benefit of being able to see this info, or the sentences that come before and after...

is considered a pioneer among mystery novels

I agree with most of the previous answers, but this can be expressed more concisely. I think you should always use the fewest words you can.

agree Charles Davis : I wish to make it clear that I do not agree with your brevity rule and I don't think the other answers are all equally good. I'm agreeing with this not because it's brief but because it's a good translation :)

When I trained as a journalist, the first thing we were taught was that every word should count. If you think it's a good translation, that's presumably because it uses so few words.

neutral David Ronder : If it's all about concision, why not just "a pioneering mystery novel"?

Because I think it's more elegant, and you can get too obsessed with concision. I just think some of the previous answers are unnecessarily wordy.
agree Thomas Walker : I think "pionera" is what was in the ST, & should be reflected in the translation. I think English "forerunner" would be rendered in Spanish probably by "precursor", which is not what is in the ST.

is considered an avant-guard mystery novel

This is another possible option.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : No, avantgarde has connotations of radical and experimental. This was just an early example.
