Fortbildung

German to English Law/Patents Metallurgy / Casting general terminology
The word is used in the following context:
Die Erfindung betrifft eine Fortbildung der Bundaustragseinrichtungen …
Die Fortbildung des Bundwagens hat dafür zu sorgen ...
I know that the word "Fortbildung" is used in patents in a special and rather weird meaning, but I cannot find any sources that would put me out of my misery. Any ideas? Thanks!

It is most likely "embodiment". Philgoddard, if you post your answer as an "answer", I will award points. It is now posted under discussion. It is most definitely not extension, and not improvement.
