• friction blisters = continuous rubbing of the epidermis causing fluid to collect
below the epidermis
• abrasions = caused by scraping the skin against a rough surface
– both epidermis & dermis are worn away, causing bleeding
• contusion = compression of the skin causing bleeding UNDER the skin
• laceration = cut with irregular torn edges
• avulsion = tissue that is completely ripped from its origin
• incision = cut with a smooth edge
• puncture wound = results when a sharp object penetrates the skin
