English term

wading fibres

English to French Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Mattress, duvet, pillow production
Bonjour,

Discussion

François Tardif Jul 30, 2022:
Concerning garnissage vs garniture, both correct? As Tony M correctly pointed out, there are sometimes different and contradictory choices of terms on the internet. As you surely know, one should not rely only on one source —let alone, one writer, editor or even translator— to certify the correct usage of one term over the other; confirming with several credible sources or ultimately with one or more good general and/or technical dictionaries is a rule of thumb.

Also, we must consider where the translation is headed, since garnissage may be used in Europe in that sense, but is unheard of in Canadian French, whereas rembourrage, bourrage, rembourrure, ouate is widely used.
All that to say fibres de garnissage would be correct considering all French dictionaries, and fibres de garniture would not.
Salutations to all!

On mentionne ici:
ouate de rembourrage

Tony M Jul 29, 2022:
@ Asker Yes, but do note it is not 'wadded fibres' — the fibres themselves are not 'wadded', it is the fibres that constitute the 'wadding'; I think it would probably be more something like 'garniture en fibres de...' or 'fibres de garniture' or 'ouate de...'
Maximilien Petitjean (asker) Jul 29, 2022:
Hi Tony, I was considering "ouatées" as a possible option too.
Tony M Jul 29, 2022:
@ Asker I strongly suspect, from your context, that this is a typoe for 'wadding' — the 'garniture' for a pillow, cushion, duvet, etc.
The trouble is, auto-correct or auto-complete would percevie both of those as perfectly valid words!
Obviously, 'wad' is related to 'ouate', though in many usages the meanings are slightly skewed.

fibres de garniture / ouate de rembourrage

All credit to Samuël for the second suggestion above!

I am convinced this is a simple typo for 'wadding', which seems entirely more plausible in what would seem to be the context here.

As François kindly points out, the 'wadding' used to fill things like pillows etc. is more properly referred to as 'garnissage'. However, both terms are widely found on the 'Net, here are just two examples on the first page of Ghits, and in a context of pillows:

Merci, Samuël !
agree Daryo : fibres de garniture

Merci, Daryo !
agree François Tardif : C’est en fait « fibres ou ouate de rembourrage ». « Garniture » n’a le sens de filling qu’en cuisine, sinon c’est un objet servant à orner ou à protéger ou à renforcer (lining, covering).

Merci, François !
agree BdiL : I perceive fibres biblically wading through l'Océan Atlantique (carrying me along) and me unfit to be understood (mon français de France). Funny enough there'a a typo in typoe, but superinteresting discussion when Tony is part of. Merci les gars. MAu ;-)

résistant/ durable ou étanche

En prenant en compte le sens originel du terme je suppose que le texte veut exprimer quelque chose d'extrême dureté.
Example sentence:

un matelas étanche par exemple

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : « le sens original du terme » is nothing do with résistant / durable / étanche either — 'to wade' means to walk in (usually deep) water or mud, etc.
