English term

homestay and boarding

English Other Education / Pedagogy
Context:
INVITATION TO A SCHOOLS WORKSHOP

Agents will be able to meet a good selection of secondary schools, including:

• government and private schools
• homestay and boarding
• welcoming study groups and short-term students
• located all over New Zealand
• academically strong, offering English language support and a broad range of extra-curricular activities
• schools that will make your students feel happy

Discussion

philgoddard Jun 15, 2018:
One way around the problem would be to drop the bullet points and use continuous prose.
Yvonne Gallagher Jun 15, 2018:
the "selection of secondary schools" means that different schools offer different courses, and different lodging arrangements and are located in various places across the country. Yes, the schools are split into 2 general types, government (state) or private, but that doesn't mean that there are no other subdivisions, size of school, rural or urban etc. and type/duration of course etc.
Nam Vo (asker) Jun 15, 2018:
Exactly. It is quite badly written.
philgoddard Jun 15, 2018:
This is badly written because the first sentence leads you to expect the bullet points to be different types of school, but only the first two are. The word "including" is misleading , so in your translation you could say something like "these are".
The last bullet point is funny because it implies that some of the schools will not make your children happy.

Selected

stay in someone's house or stay in school

homestay=stay in someone's house (and be like member of family)

boarding= stay in the school =boarding school

"Boarding" usually means boarding school in this context (but it can be about a lodger paying for board in a residencein another context.)
