Italian term

tastatore (in this context)

Italian to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Packaging materials
Description of a container for an antiseptic solution:

"Flacone in vetro scuro da 50 ml, completo di una capsula a strappo di alluminio verniciato con tastatore di politene incorporato"

All the translations/descriptions of "tastatore" I've seen refer to some kind of probe or stylus, which can't be the case here! The only thing I can think of is that it's a safety cap - is this possible?
Proposed translations (English)
2 +1 dropper

Discussion

Marie-Hélène Hayles (asker) Oct 27, 2005:
dropper is a nice idea... unfortunately I'm translating the manufacturing QC procedure, which gives no indication of how the tastatore is used - it just says to check that it conforms with the product specifications.

Could it be a dropper? What is the product and its route of administration?

Sorry - now I've re-read your question I can see that the product is an antiseptic solution. It could well be that this is administered via a dropper, to control the amount applied.

agree Rachel Fell : dispensing nozzle, maybe?Hm - dispensing device maybe, but it's a bit vague

Thanks, Rachel. It's impossible to say for sure without a picture or concrete description, but "probe" says to me something that goes into the bottle, whereas I would see a "nozzle" as sticking out.

Comment: "Thanks again for your input, Gillian - in the end I asked the client, as a second document I was translating for them actually used the term "contagocce" - which of course really is a dropper. The response that came back for "tastatore" was "spatula". And as the client is always right..."
