rigor de papel

Spanish to English Other Philosophy
A complicated text about museums and audiences:

Helena Chavarria Jan 3, 2022:
@Beatriz Ah, I understand.
Hi, Elena, I only try to explain the meaning in my non native English, and I would prefer to leave the actual wording to our native colleagues.
Helena Chavarria Jan 3, 2022:
@Beatriz If you're so sure, please post an answer. As soon as I saw the question, I immediately looked for the meaning of 'de papel' but because I couldn't find any references, I was left with an idea in my head that I can't express in words in either Spanish or English.
Hi, Ormiston, If we wanted to mean "strictures as a role" we would say "su rigor como papel", or even "el rigor de su papel", but never "su rigor de papel".
José Patrício Jan 3, 2022:
it plays a strictly defined part/role: it’s my idea though not expressed so clearly
ormiston Jan 3, 2022:
Could it not, at a pinch, mean (strictures) AS a role / given its status sort of idea ? (As in 'las responsabilidades de reino')
@Ormiston Yes, "su" refers to "teoría", but "de papel" (adjective) cannot mean "role" (noun).

The structure of the sentence is: "Más acá de la teoría del distanciamiento estético and its academic/formal strictures, etc."
ormiston Jan 2, 2022:
I imagine 'su' refers to 'teoría' And could mean the 'strictures imposed by its status/role'. Just a thought
@Paul I don't think so.
In this case, we don't have "papel" (role) as a noun, but "de papel" as an adjective, meaning "formal".
The literal translation of "rigor de papel" is "formal strictness". In this context, you could even say "academic strictness".
Helena Chavarria Jan 2, 2022:
@Paul Whether or not that's what it means, it would fit nicely!
Paul Ryan Jan 2, 2022:
Is it something like 'its strictly defined role', 'that it plays a strictly defined part/role'?
Helena Chavarria Jan 2, 2022:
@Beatriz I agree with you. I've got an idea in my head but don't know how to express it. I don't think it has anything to do with paper.
IMO "rigor de papel" is a metaphor for "rigor teórico" or "rigor formal".

This is in line with the well-known expression "sobre el papel" = "en teoría".

In this case, "rigor formal" would best fit the context .
Helena Chavarria Jan 2, 2022:
I think 'papel' is 'role'. I can't think of how to express it in English, but I understand it to mean 'its rigor/rigour inherent to the role it plays', though there's probably a much better way of expressing it!

significance

It's within the context of museums and art galleries:
'Closer than the theory on aesthetic distances or separation and its significance lies its unsubstantiated though consistent story-line, plot or conspiracy, along with some experimentation, which can all be found inside art galleries and museums, their halls and public audiences alongside correlated inner elements.'

ES: Más cerca que la teoría sobre las distancias estéticas y la separación con su sentido u significado importante queda su argumento u su guión no probado aunque constante y la experimentación sin reservas (no calificada). Ellos se encuentran dentro de una galería de arte y un museo, en sus salas, donde un público y las obras artísticas fundamentan y corroboran esos elementos y características.

A mim parece-me que a frase ‘rigor de papel’ significa pura e simplesmente já que o papel representou desde sempre grande rigor na sua manufatura. P e.
