Hi all,

I have been using Trados for many years and love it. Now one of my clients wants me to use SDLX.
I have used it a few times and translating files is just fine, although it took a bit of getting used to. My only problem, however, is the analysis. I know I can't analyse the files with a freelance version and need to trust my client's analysis. However, I would like to have my own analysis before accepting the job. I have been using Trados for many years and love it. Now one of my clients wants me to use SDLX.
I have used it a few times and translating files is just fine, although it took a bit of getting used to. My only problem, however, is the analysis. I know I can't analyse the files with a freelance version and need to trust my client's analysis. However, I would like to have my own analysis before accepting the job. So far I have exported all files to ttx, cleaned them up and made a TM (Although I am sure there is a quicker way to do this). I guess the analysis I get should be exactly like my client's, is that correct? I am asking this because I get a lot more "no match" than what my clients is saying and since they pay less for fuzzies, it makes a big difference to me.

You can analyze SDLX files in Trados Sep 6, 2010

However the results will differ.
I am not an expert in SDLX, but can imagine Trados giving you less 100% matches than SDLX.
Also the wordcount may differ. Nevertheless, if the differences are not too big this would be enough for you as confirmation, I think.

the wordcount is actually not that different. What differs is the no matches: 523 words on a 3800 words file. To me it looks like a lot, but maybe that's normal...

No splitting with sdlx Sep 6, 2010

It is unusual to count matches in sdlx in the way Trados does. My customers pay for each word that has to be translated. The Statistics function shows how much has to be translated.
The same is true for Transit. This splitting of segments into fuzzy matches applies only to Trados. So if you do not use Trados for the job, count only the untranslated words.

SDLX can simulate autopropagation Sep 6, 2010

This might be caused by the fact that SDLX can simulate autopropagation while Trados can't. If you have received a log file from your client, check if under Autopropagation Options it says "Enabled: Yes". This means that if there are several similar sentences in a file, the SDLX analysis will only count the first one as new and the other as fuzzy matches, while in the Trados analysis all sentences will be counted as new. This could explain the discrepancy in new words.

This setting is changed in the "SDLX Switchboard" under Options>General, and it impacts all SDLX applications.

If you look at the word count in SDL Edit (View>Statistics), the numbers will be different, depending on the general setting for the "Use Microsoft Word style word counting" option. ▲ Collapse

I have checked one of the logs they sent me and, indeed, it says "Autopropagation Options:

The Word Count Algorithm is "standard".

From now on I won't try to analyse the files with Trados anymore.
