Source text - English Arguably, the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Lawrence v. Texas might suggest the need for a more rigorous justification for laws banning polygamy. The Court held there that “the fact that the governing majority in a State has traditionally viewed a particular practice as immoral is not a sufficient reason for upholding a law prohibiting the practice.” The Court also suggested that the Constitution’s regard for personal freedom in intimate relationships, “as a general rule, should counsel against attempts by a State, or a court, to define the meaning of the relationship or to set its boundaries absent injury to a person or abuse to an institution the law protects.” If so, then the constitutionality of laws prohibiting polygamy may depend ultimately on the empirical demonstration of concrete harms associated with the practice. One difficulty in relying on concerns about the potential instability or exploitative nature of polygamous relationships is that the State does relatively little in other contexts to prevent unstable or exploitative marriages from going forward.
Although the Mormon Church banned polygamy in 1890, substantial pockets of resistance remain in Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, and Montana to this day. In a highly publicized 2001 case, Utah polygamist Tom Greene was convicted of bigamy and sentenced to prison.
§ 3.4 Marriage Age
Age limitations on marriage originally were founded on the reasonable consideration that candidates for marriage should have reached puberty. Accordingly, the common law permitted males to many at 14 and females at 12. When the ages were raised, differentiation on the basis of gender remained common, justified by the male’s traditional role as breadwinner, until it was struck down under the Equal Protection Clause in the 1970s. State regulation continues to insist on setting a nearly absolute minimum age for marriage (the UMDA suggests 16) and a somewhat higher age (the UMDA suggests 18) below which marriage requires parental consent. Special circumstances, such as pregnancy or a demonstration of unusual maturity, are allowed to undercut minimum age requirements in many states, upon petition to and approval by a court.
Today’s substantially raised minimum age for marriage, well past the age of puberty, remains supportable by the need for contractual capacity. Moreover, marriage requires emotional maturity as well as the ability to be self-supporting.

Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.

recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
