Hi everyone. I have recently bought a new computer where I have installed my SDL Trados Freelance 2007.
I have a job for a new client, provided as an Excel worksheet, which I translated using TagEditor. When cleaning up, I first had problems with the tab names, which I have resolved by restoring the source names. Finally the file has "cleaned up" however when I open what should be the translated Excel file, I get this warning:

When cleaning up, I first had problems with the tab names, which I have resolved by restoring the source names. Finally the file has "cleaned up" however when I open what should be the translated Excel file, I get this warning:
"Excel found unreadable content in "filename". Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook click Yes."
I click YES and the file that is opened up only contains one image which was in the source file, and basically EMPTY cells (with just the coloured borders left). No content. I also get a small popup: "Repairs to 'filename'":
"Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content.
Removed Part: /xl/sharedStrings.xml part with XML error. (Strings) Catastrophic failure Line 111, column 0.
Removed Records: Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet1.xml part
Removed Records: Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet2.xml part
Removed Records: Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet3.xml part
Removed Records: Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet4.xml part
Removed Records: Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet5.xml part"
It then provides a link to something that crashes...
Please help, I am tearing my hair out and need to deliver the job to the client today!
I also tried just saving the target as in TagEditor but the same problem occurs.

Even if you simply look at the name of your programs...
What you expect can be done with Excel 2007 format.
Open the file in Excel 2007, save it in Excel 2007 format or, if that is not available, in E2003, translate in Tageditor with your TM (or use Translate function from the Workbench), save as target and open in E2010, save as Excel 2010.

To be perfectly honest I would have thought that any software that isn't compatible with another should not be able to be opened and worked on without any warning - I had no such warning when working on this file. Also, in this day and age, I think it would be incredibly myopic of any software developer not to think about backwards (or forwards) compatibility as things are moving quite fast, technologically speaking.

To be perfectly honest I would have thought that any software that isn't compatible with another should not be able to be opened and worked on without any warning - I had no such warning when working on this file. Also, in this day and age, I think it would be incredibly myopic of any software developer not to think about backwards (or forwards) compatibility as things are moving quite fast, technologically speaking.
So forgive me for giving some credit to SDL developers...
Your reasoning does not follow as many programs released at different times interact perfectly well.
In any case, getting back to my problem, your suggested solutions don't work. I get this error message:
(-2147467259): Connection with server application error:
Specified cast is not valid.
Or 80005... same message
I am not sure what to do and a bit desperate! I have tried both your options but for some reason neither workbench nor tageditor seem to like working with this 97-2003 file (2007 wasn't available).
Do you have any other tips?

In that case Microsoft is the one not keeping backward compatibilty. It is hard to expect anyone today to develop a tool, which will be compatible with an uknnown tool to be released in three years for now.

The culprit in your case is, that you do not have an Office version installed, which would be compatible with Trados 2007. I have forgotten that when posting the first time. Regardless the file version of the Excel document you attempt to open Tageditor and/or Workbench try to open Excel in the background for converting the file. But obviously there is no compatible Excel on your machine.
As Trados 2007 is also compatible with OpenOffice this would be the possibility now: open the Excel in OO and save in its native format. This should be then translatable with your software.
OTOH for longer run you will need Office 2003 or at least Office 2007 on your computer.
The same problems now happening with Excel will most probably occur also with Word or PPT, if you don't install a compatible Office package. ▲ Collapse

But you probably agree that it is your duty to be aware of what kinds of files you open with your software. As Jerzy rightly expressed, no software manufacturer can possibly take into account what others may do in 3 or 5 years time...
Trados 2007 was (is) compatible with certain versions of Office. It is your duty to check which ones, and BEFORE you change to a new version of Office (or any other software), you should check whether it will be compatible with your CAT software.

in Office 2007, you can use the Save As feature to save in Office 97-2003 format. Would Office 2010 not offer the option of saving in Office 2007 format?
If so, you could have saved the doc in Excel 2007 format and then used the translate function in Trados to pretranslate the file from the TM?

Office 2010 DOES NOT give you the option of saving a file in 2007 format, I don't know why. So I had to e-mail someone who had both TW and Office 2007, they managed to clean up but in a very rough way, I had to spend hours and hours tidying up the document, it was hell.

I mean, if I can still work with Word 2003 documents 7 years later, why not with TW 3 years later? Admittedly, Office no longer offer support for 2003 but this is quite a recent development.
