Voted "working" but since the 30th of September is a Sunday I will hopefully be able to put up my feet and simply ignore the fact that it is International Translation Day.
A day that I'm strongly tempted to celebrate, though, is kanelbullens dag on the 4th of October. | | | Ty Kendall United Kingdom Local time: 17:57 Hebrew to English
Do people acutally celebrate these artificially created days?
My answer is no, just like I won't be celebrating International Literacy Day the day after tomorrow or World Suicide Prevention Day on the 10th, or the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on the 16th, or the International Day of Peace on the 21st, or World Tourism Day on the 27th, or World Maritime Day on the same day, or World Rabies Day (Really?) on the 28th......... "The best laid schemes of mice and men..." so I rarely make plans for anything. I see it's a Sunday, so I might try to make it to the pub quiz in town, and if I do, I'll probably meet some colleagues there. However, since it's a few weeks away, it's far too early to say.
To quote Commander Shore at the beginning of each episode of Stingray, "Anything can happen in the next half hour!"

Like inkweaver, I voted working, but now see it is a Sunday. Maybe I shall celebrate by not working. Or perhaps my plans will be entirely unaffected by the fact it is International Translation Day! | | | Haven't a clue ... | Sep 6, 2012 |
Should have been one of the options, so I voted "Other".
However, if this month is like the past couple, I shall probably be showing my solidarity to fellow translators around the world by working my nuts off. | | | I take Sundays off | Sep 6, 2012 |
I avoid working on Sundays, so will probably take the day off as usual and barely notice that it is International Translation Day. | | | John Cutler Spain Local time: 18:57 Spanish to English + ...
I'm not even certain what I'll be doing tomorrow, so I can't say what I'll be doing a couple of weeks from now.
Sorry to be a party-pooper, but, in any event, I can think of better things to celebrate than my work.

Never heard of it, and like most International .... Days it's probably not worth the years of negotiations at the UN, UNESCO, the EU, NATO, FIFA, Lower Fiddling in the Marsh village council etc that preceded its adoption. | | | Andrea Munhoz Brazil Local time: 14:57 Portuguese to English + ... Perhaps this year I shall actually post a blog on Saint Jerome, the Patron Saint of Translators (heh, and Librarians!), for whom 30 September is marked in the Catholic calendar. As he was quite pivotal as a translator in his day, I shall be approaching the story from a translator's perspective more than anything else. A great translator who managed without the Internet, electricity, and running water... | | | Do not plan to.. | Sep 6, 2012 |
for I do that everyday! A day off for the celebrations. | | | Mario Chavez (X) Local time: 12:57 English to Spanish + ... It's our day! | Sep 6, 2012 |
Well, all celebratory dates are artificial: Mother's Day, Children's Day (in Argentina), Labor Day, Memorial Day, Women's Year, etc. We (society) build them because we find a good reason to.
While I'm not known for celebrating any festivities (including Turkey Day or Thanksgiving Day here in America), I can understand the reason for such celebrations.
Perhaps many of you feel jaded about the profession that now it's just a money-making activity like lawn mowing, plumbin... At the same time, I don't need a special day to ponder on the marvels and mysteries of human language. I read and learn about it all year round. ▲ Collapse | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: I plan to celebrate International Translation Day on September 30th by...
