Is good old Trados 2007 compatible with Windows 8? Thread poster: Éva Méh

I like the traditional layout, so although I have a version of Studio, I would like to go on using 2007. I wonder if it agrees with the new Windows 8 and especially with any new versions of MS Office. (I am still using Word 2003 as I have been scared away from upgrading because of alleged incompatibilities.) Would be grateful for your experiences. Eva

Haven't done any extensive testing, but both Workbench and TagEditor 8.63 appear to work in Windows 8: ![](http://content.screencast.com/users/dominique.pivard/folders/Jing/media/e6a2781a-b195-4886-8427-93750115d568/00000009.png) Strangely enough, I was asked if I wanted to enable 16-bit application support for TagEditor during install: ![](http://content.screencast.com/users/dominique.pivard/folders/Jing/media/1b87d638-2c2e-4c90-a498-2149fa25ba75/00000008.png) I said "strangely enough", because TagEditor.exe is a 32-bit application AFAIK. As to MS Office: Office 2010 does install OK under Windows 8, and trados8.dotm will work in the 32-bit version of Word 2010 (but not the 64-bit version).

Thank you guys for the answers, I feel much better now.![](https://cfcdn.proz.com/images/bb/smiles/icon_smile.gif) Still now that I know that it runs all right on W8 and O2010, I still wonder if it works faultlessly. I know it does work with O2007 but mysterious problems tend to occur. So I would be grateful if you could get back to me with any practical details later. Thanks once more, Eva

Éva Méh wrote: Still now that I know that it runs all right on W8 and O2010, I still wonder if it works faultlessly. Given that Windows 8 was officially released two days ago, it's probably too early to say. Generally speaking, applications that work OK in Windows 7 should work OK in Windows 8 as well. Changes in Windows 8 are mostly related to the user interface, not to the way most applications interact with the operating system. That is at least my experience with the Preview version of Windows 8, which I have been running since June. Éva Méh wrote: I know it does work with O2007 but mysterious problems tend to occur. I couldn't say (although I have a license for Trados 2007 & 2011, I don't use either in production), but I've seen reports of problems (don't know if they are mysterious or not) with Word 2010 as well. This is not surprising given that Trados 2007 predates Word 2010, and that Word 2010 isn't officially supported by SDL for use with Trados 2007 (Word 2007, OTOH, is supported).
Hello there, I am experiencing the same problems. My computer broke last week and I had to get a new one. I bought it Yesterday but I just checked and my OS is 64 bit and no less. I use Trados 2007 on Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, and it works OK. the same should happen in Windows 8, I suppose. 64 bits OS support 32 bits applications. good luck!

Install 32-bit Office 2010 | Nov 5, 2012 |

It will only fail if you install the 64-bit version of Office 2010 (as trados8.dotm is not compatible with it). Install the 32-bit Office 2010 (or any previous version of Office, as they are only available in the 32-bit form) and Workbench 8.3 will install just fine, as shown in my earlier post. Just because you are using a 64-bit version of Windows doesn't mean you have to use the 64-bit of Office.
Why Bother Upgrading to Windows 8 | Nov 5, 2012 |
Hi, Why would anyone bother upgrading to Windows 8 and still use an obsolete tool like Trados 2007 - is dinosaur technology to me! Any CAT tools older than about 1 year is a dead loss! Beats me! Bernard

See above - Trados 2007 remains very popular among agencies.
No need for a virtual machine | Nov 6, 2012 |

Trados Workbench has no particular problem with 64-bit Windows, so there's no need to run 32-bit Windows in a virtual machine. The "problem" only exists in the imagination of the original poster. Could very well be. I had thought that 32-bit OSes were considered more reliable than 64-bit ones. Or is that an old-wives' tale? For example, aren't the 32-bit versions of Ubuntu usually recommended for novices?
32 vs. 64-bit | Nov 6, 2012 |
Питер wrote: I had thought that 32-bit OSes were considered more reliable than 64-bit ones. Or is that an old-wives' tale? For example, aren't the 32-bit versions of Ubuntu usually recommended for novices? It's the first time I hear 64-bit OSes are less reliable than the corresponding 32-bit version. I have no idea about Linux/Ubuntu, but I have been using 64-bit Windows 7 for the past 2 years and haven't had any problems with it. Current versions of OS X are only available as 64-bit, btw. 64-bit OSes are clearly the future, since they let you take advantage of all the RAM installed in your computer. 64-bit applications will follow, but right now a typical situation is a 64-bit OS with a mix of 32 and 64-bit applications running inside it. MemoQ is the only CAT tool I'm aware of that is available in both 32 and 64-bit forms (the 64-bit version – 6.0.55 – was first rolled out in September 2012).

I'm so proud, it's a Hungarian software I like it very much and would be quite content to use it if (horribile dictu) nothing else ran on W8. Dominique, you have comforted me. I only hope agencies will catch up soon.
