Some of these services fall into more than one category. I took liberties and inserted a few things above...

Desktop Publishing tasks are often bundled with translation and localization tasks. The same can be said of digital graphics tasks (image editing, image localization), and this seems to have been overlooked completely so far...

Better filtering for AI-related notifications Nov 27, 2024

Miranda Drew wrote:

I know many will not agree with me but I have to speak up. I completely disagree with embracing AI prompting and other services that have absolutely NOTHING to do with translation. This is the main reason I didn't renew my Proz membership this year.

I am aware that Proz itself is probably realizing it is becoming irrelevant as the translation field is dying and that is why all these new services are being added.

Thank you for your comments, Miranda.

Naturally, I and the rest of the ProZ team do not believe that translation as a field is dying due to AI, just like it didn't die due to CAT tools and machine translation.

However, we cannot ignore that there is an ever-growing market for AI-related services where the skills and knowledge of specialized linguists are needed, and we want to make it possible for the professionals embracing these new technologies and the clients in need of their services to find each other, while still accommodating those who have no interest in them.

The intention of adding AI-focused services to the service list is precisely to allow outsourcers to better label their offers and better target their searches, which will in turn lead to less irrelevant messages and enable translators uninterested in AI to turn off all notifications for AI-related offers.

We believe that there's a bright and thriving future for linguists, both those who are ready and willing to work with AI, and those who specialize in fields where AI is not relevant or useful, and we want ProZ to serve everyone.

Thank you all for your thoughts! Nov 27, 2024

Novian Cahyadi wrote:

My problem with calling it as subtitles translation, is it could be misleading. The client may think this includes transcribing the text from the video, and then create the translation as subtitles. We could've avoided this issue altogether by using the proper name for each subcategory.

Thank you again, Novian!

You are absolutely right —I have had that problem myself!— and I think that it's likely that inexpert clients who don't know the distinction between different types of subtitling services will only select the main service. It's likely that the final list for Subtitling services will closely reflect your suggestions, and I can't thank you enough for your input.

Am I missing it or is human translation no longer a thing?

Thank you, Ralph!

We debated whether we should include it as a distinct service under "Translation" —however, it's likely that MTPE will be split off as its own service, which would make clarifying that "Translation" is "human translation" redundant. That said, if a client were to type in "human translation" when searching for services, that would deliver "Translation" as a result.

Does that make sense to you?

Tanya Quintieri wrote:

Under copywriting, I would add AI Content Editor. Under localization, I would add Localization Engineer. It goes a bit further than UX / UI localization. And I am missing Consulting as a primary service completely.

Thank you, Tanya! These are all strong suggestions, it's likely they'll all make it into the list.

Thank you, Bella! Your thoughts are very useful.

Regarding your suggestion about "Transcription", you are right to point out that some clients think of it as part of subtitling. Following the logic I was explaining earlier in the thread, some services might be "duplicated" in more than one category, and this might be such a case.

You also mention that DTP is often bundled into other tasks. I do want to clarify that job posters will still be able to request more than one service when posting offers —so they may select e.g. "Product information localization" and "Desktop publishing" together. That said, while we hope to build a more explicative job posting path for laypeople in need of language services, there will always be clients who are not sufficiently informed and will need you, as the freelancer, to clarify the scope of the project and propose an appropriate rate.

Finally, regarding your comments on image handling, we'll likely add "Imagine localization" under localization-related services, but where do you see other graphics-related services fitting? Would you say that "Image editing" would make sense as a specific service under DTP?

Thanks again to everyone for your opinions and your time!

An important consideration on AI training Nov 28, 2024

Regarding AI training, I think we should always bear in mind that small to medium sized agencies and companies can't afford to train AI models.
This means that only a few big players are doing it, with a whole army of peanuts-paying agencies - mainly from Eastern or African countries - as subcontractors to do the dirty work for them.
So when you talk about "AI training" here on ProZ, you know that you are going to feed a very few big companies to the detriment of the majority,

What about investigation? Dec 5, 2024

Andrea Capuselli wrote:

Hi everyone,

As part of ProZ's ongoing modernization, we're working on a fresh approach to how services are organized and reported. The goal? To make it easier for you to showcase what you do, and to fine-tune the notifications you receive.

The new list of services would have a two-tier structure:

  • Primary services: Broad categories that cover the main types of work.

  • Sub-services (optional): More specific options for those who want to get into details.

This structure is designed to balance simplicity and flexibility, allowing you to choose how much information you'd like to provide.

We'd love your input to make sure this works for everyone!

  • Are there any services you'd add or remove?
  • Do you think any names could be improved or clarified?
  • Feel free to share any other thoughts —your reasoning will help guide us!

So, without further ado…

The new list of services

  • Translation
  • Interpreting
  • Quality assurance (QA)
  • Subtitling
  • Copywriting
  • AI training
  • Cognitive debriefing
  • Desktop publishing
  • Education
  • Localization
  • Project management
  • Summarization
  • Terminology management
  • Transcreation
  • Transcription
  • Vendor management
  • Voice talent

Thanks for helping us shape the future of ProZ!

Happy translating,

Andrea
The ProZ team

Are you consider to add anything related to Translation Studies/traductology or research in translation or lingüistics?

It could be nice to have the chance to add it to our profiles, and, to see if there's any interest about it beyond academy... especially now that AI is on the rise.
IMHO, TS about AI translation are much needed.
