Source text - Spanish Esta especie, crece desde la Provincia de Valparaíso hasta la Provincia de Aysén, puede presentarse como arbusto o árbol siempreverde, llegando a alcanzar entre 12 a 15 m de altura y diámetros de hasta 50 cm. Su crecimiento es lento y se caracteriza por su corteza de color rojo ladrillo, muy lisa y sedosa, con manchas blancas, debido a la periódica caída de corteza vieja. Su florescencia se produce durante enero y mayo y está representada por flores hermafroditas de color blanco de 1,5 cm de diámetro. Su fruto es una baya redondeada de color negro que contiene tres semillas en forma arriñonada. El Arrayán, crece preferentemente en terrenos muy húmedos, en las riberas de río y lagos. Debido a que su madera es muy dura y compacta, es utilizada para la fabricación de mangos de herramientas y como leña.
Translation - English This species grows from the Valparaíso Province to the Aysén Province, and may exist as a shrub or evergreen tree, reaching heights of 12 to 15m, and diameters up to 50cm. Of slow growth, it is characterized by red brick colored bark, very smooth and silky, with white spots, due to the periodical pealing of aging bark. Its blooming occurs during January and May, with white hermaphrodite flowers of 1.5cm in diameter. Its fruit is a rounded black colored berry, containing three seeds shaped like a kidney. The Arrayán grows preferably in humid terrain, by the shores of rivers and lakes. Since its wood is very hard and compact, it is used for the manufacturing of tool handles and as firewood.
